Mobil 1

Post by BockingBandit »

Well well well, .. I've just changed the gearbox oil to Mobil 1, and I now stink of the gloopy hypoid gunk that was in there before. Wow, .. what a difference,.. it changes gear more like my old flyingbricks now and a whole lot smoother.
My only critisism, .. £12 per Ltr, .... I've bought cheaper perfumes for all of my ex-wives.

Mmmmm..... Interesting.

I might just try the Chevron Fully Synth (Dead cheap from Costco) No -NOT "Dead Sheep" in my gearbox then :dontknow:

Anyone else got experience of fully synth in the 'box?

Yep used it in my 1100S smoother than a babys bum.

Might just try it in the 1200GS.

Mind you the difference in the two gearbox's is worlds apart so it may just be a waste.

Fully syn in the gearbox!!!!,you should have tried it 6 years ago when no bugger had done it,substituteing porridge for cats piss,it's what called a leap of faith!!!,but glad you got there in the end!!.

And no,the alternatives ain't as good, when i struggled to get Mobil when i needed to change the gearbox oil and couldn't find any, tried a cheaper alternative,it didn't work.

Hang on........... I think you're elevating Mobil 1 to the level of Snake oil. :?

I can't believe that it is superior to another premium-grade fully-synth for a gearbox that appears to be out a Massey Ferguson.

I can understand that it may lubricate a group B rally car turbocharger in a superior fashion to Chevron Synth, but in an R1100s gearbox :?

I'll give the Chevron a whirl (cos I have a stock of it) and see if it performs better than the cooking oil that's in there just now.

Excellent ... something else to fiddle with (I just can't help myself) ... Geoff, is that the 75W-140?

If I had a garage I'd be dangerous.

Thanks, Lee.

Bockingbandit, are you saying that you put engine oil in the gearbox? I do hope that you are joking. You might find a secondhand one on ebay.
I used 75?90 synthetic gearbox oil in mine and it has made a great difference, but I would never consider using engine oil in there.

OUTLET?

Post by ivorbaines »

While we are on the subject of Full Synthetic 75/90 gearbox lub oil. Over here in North Bristol the only place that I could find that has it on the shelf is the shop at Castle Combe Racetrack. It was around the £12/Ltr. Maybe be of use to someone.
Cheers

They are in fact within good spitting distance of my Stockton office. Though they make no mention of a walk-in facility on their webbie, if there is enough call I could stop by, collect enough gallons for you tight-arissed Southerners and bring it down with me on 15th Jan when I am, once again, down for 2 nights. Pelican may call it a 'Group Buy'!

Lee's been on to me again asking about this.

I can pick this stuff up over the counter and bring some down with me Monday next week. However, I'm booked on the train (trying to avoid potential nasty weather) so my lugging abilities are perhaps limited. Anyone else want some bringing down and we can meet up or nominate a 'local stockist' for you to collect from?

To be sure it's the right stuff, we are talking about Mobilube 1 SHC 75w/90, are we not?
