tranceiver interference

I have just become the proud owner of an R1200RT and finding it great. I am trying to install a radio transceiver on the bike through a Starcom system. All is working well except for interference on the transmission. I wonder if anyone has fitted a transceiver to this bike and had any success with curing interference problems. Any suggestions would be greatfully received. I haven't got much hair left to pull out!

I would suggest looking for a 'clean' earth. That is, don't tap into any other earth wires in the harness, but take a line straight back to the battery earth. That's usually the first place to start.

If no joy there then the same again for the +Ve.

If still no joy you may need shielded cables.

I thought that the R1200RT had a canbus wiring system, does that have normal earth wires?

One of my contacts works with this system for Aston Martin, give me specifics and I'll ask the question. I did think that after market stuff was a no-no with the new signal wires.

The machine has the new wiring loom (can bus system). I have put filters on the starcom supply (also ran it from a seperate battery to ensure it is clean). The rig is operating on its own battery to avoid a very loud hum. The lead from the starcom to the rig has an isolation transformer included in the mic lead but all to no avail. The interference is only on the transmitted signal and does not alter with engine speed. I am at a loss as to what else can be done........ I am stumped!!!!

the current state of play.... if the rig is connected to the starcom then ...interference. connect mic via starcom and audio bsp[eaker via starcom phone socket then mujch imp[rovement. still working on it.......

This is an update on the interference problem. I'm posting this for general information. Following extensive experimentation I have found that the power supply on the CAN bus system is noisy. Extensive filtering (chokes and caps) does not eliminate the problem entirely. Non sensitive equipment fares better. Connecting PDA/SatNav, telephone and mp3 player through the Starcom is easy and successfull. No problems if the correct wires are used. Connecting a tranceiver via the radio socket on Starcom is the problem. When the mic leads and speaker leads are routed through the 6 pin mini din plug as recommended then interference on transmissions results. Unplugging the speaker lead from the transmitter cures the problem but of course you can't hear the radio on the Starcom. Connecting the speaker lead from the tranceiver to the phone input on the Starcom significantly improves the situation. (If the PDA/SatNav/phone is bike powered then make sure signals are routed via isolation transformers before connecting to Starcom. This setup gives an acceptable solution in terms of signal quality but I still have a whine (alternator) on transmit. This is the current position pending further work. Obviously there is interaction between the speaker and mic leads (using vox the received signal triggers transmit - only cured by reducing vox trigger to an unacceptably low level) that may be resolved by better screening. Still working on this and improving the filtering of the rigs power supply. If there is any interest? I will keep you posted on further developments.
