For various reasons I am considering changing my trusty and much loved S for a GS. I cant afford a new one, will probably be an 1100, maybe an 1150.
Anyone care to give me their oppinions on whether this is a good idea or not!

Oh, also, would I be better selling my bike as standard and selling the bits seperately. Its a 1999 black S, 9000 miles with laser cans, BB power chip, zach Y piece, wunderlich seat, K+N Filter, centre stand. And dont start asking for the bits just yet you vultures! I havent fully made up my mind yet!

Whatever you do make sure that you get a good ride on the GS. I tried the S and the GS back to back and it was the buffeting that I couldn't do with. This was on an Adventure with the tall screen, but I understand the regular one does it to (I'm 6'1"). It would not have been bad enough to stop me buying one, it's just that the S was better. I did like the feeling on top of the Adventure, it was bloody HUGE. Get some side halogens and it's a scary beast!
As Chris said the 1200 really is a major step forward. Don't want spoil anything for you but I should think your biggest headache is going to be getting a decent price for your S. A 99 S even with very low miles is unfortunely not worth very much and you may struggle to find a decent GS for similar money. Unless you really must have a GS I think I'd stick with the S.

I took a big hit on my 51 s when I went to the dark side and bought an 02 Adventure.
That was 1 year ago, and I am on my second one now.
I bought an ex demo 05 model with 1200 miles.
Take no notice of Chris
he has got a Tiger fixation.
Ride the 1100 and the 1150 and make up your own mind.
I would say that if you can get a decent 1100, you wont go far wrong.
In my opinion, the build quality went south when the stoped making the 1100, not enough to put my off though.

Well Mike, i call it as i see it,the new 1200 handles well and is fast,well!!! as fast as my Tiger,1150 isn't, it's that simple,the 1150 i rode was big,bland and the motor was as flat as a witches tit,the 1150 is an image but big traillies have moved on since they were first built,just because your on an Adventure(god i hate that word)bike doesn't mean it's has to slow.
A big no,no,with both the GS's and my S,you can't alter the gearing,for a tenner a piece i can go and buy a different engine sprocket that completely changes the character of the bike
3,600 quid kin'ell you can go and buy a early(01/02) 955 for that.
A balanced view of my Tiger,it's and early 955 so all the nuts and bolts are crap,the forks are to soft(60 quid forks springs and 15wt oil),from certain angles it ain't pretty,but then neither is the GS or my S for that matter,it doesn't burn oil,you have to oil the chain but with 20 odd thousand on the clock,i'm not worrying about shaft leaks and bearings that need changeing.
In the five years(almost) i've had it,it's been top the Polish border,SOF 4 times,including a weekend thrash and back,south eastern Italy twice,and southern Spain and Portugal 3 times and it's been absolutely pasted,and still as fresh as a daisy.
Like i said the new GS is a major leap forward,so much so that the new Tiger thats in developement is going to need a lot of work,Triumphs words not mine,and thats after speaking to someone whos seen it.

Well as for my 2p's I bought a 2000 on a W 900 Tiger (the first of the injected model) to use as a winter bike as I did not want to ride the S through all of the winter crap.
Well from day one it was a peach so much more fun to ride than 1100,1150 GS and for my part the 1200GS just looks too fragile.
I was so taken with the Tiger that I traded in the S & the Tiger for a 2006 model Tiger and it really is the dogs bollocks 90mph and apart from wind noise 70% less buffeting than an 1150GS and about 1000% more character.
Changed the gear box sprocket on Saturday to a 19 tooth and as Chris it changes the bikes character again for the better 5000 rpm = 80mph need to pass a tawdy driver in front well just wind it on and all off a sudden you are in three figures.
But don't take either Chris or my word for it do youself a favour and go ride a 955I model you will get a really good example for less than 4K.
Oh and before anybody says it YES it is pig ugly from the front but you dont look at the mantle piece when you are stoking the fire

You've still got to look at it occasionally when you're not riding it, don't think I could roll out of bed everyday and be faced with that when the garage door was opened up

I had a red R1100GS.
Preferred the ergonomics of it to the S but prefer the S' looks and power.
It's a lazier ride than the S but I liked it.
With the GS' rear seat removed one can comfortably carry two cases of wine and a 24 pack of beer on the platfom without issue.
