R12s - Oil Cooler guard

Postby templen » Tue Oct 06, 2020 12:12 pm

Having purchased my "Colgate" R12s in July this year from a member of this site. I'm loving her.....

She's a beauty. Pristine condition etc, blah blah.

With winter approachng I'm looking to do some "feteling & tweaking" because that's what we all do. Anyway.

Has anybody seen or actually done a protecting mesh over the oiler cooler OR in the front nose cone area to prevent damage to said oil cooler?

To me, it appears to be very vulnerable to stones, pheasants etc.

Cheers all.

I’ve fitted a mesh guard in front of my 12s oil cooler, unfortunately I can’t remember where/who I got it from. Had it for a few years now. Try a google search. Sorry I can’t help more.

Many thanks. After taking off the front fairing cone was it easy to fit?............looked on eBay and there are plenty for the R9T, but not sure of dimensions if the same.

Hi sorry about that meant to say I’ll look at any info I may have kept, so it came from a UK BMW accessories supplier Nippy Norman’s.

https://www.nippynormans.com/

I’ve checked there website and unfortunately it’s not listed anymore nor is the simple black fibreglass hugger, shame but I suppose it’s to be expected given the bike short production run and limited sales. But as someone here said a small amount of stainless mesh will do the trick and I’m sure the mounting points are obvious when you look at the back of the fairing nose. Good luck and I’m sure you’ll love the 12s

I would use aluminium mesh, it’s easier to work, I did my 1100s with the B&Q stuff and some epoxy adhesive.

Hornig sells this...

I bought mine (the better Wunderlich version) some 14 years ago.
Gave it some extra black finish, and it's still in good nick.

For the RT I made one myself, out of such a cheap 5 Euro black bicycle basket... 8)

You're right Ron - I couldn't find it on the website. Turns out mine isn't from Hornig as it isn't attached with silicone!! I was sure thats where I got it from

Muchas Gratias (said in a Yorkshire twang) for the above.

Off topic............how did you manage to get your exhaust down pipes so blingtastic? I'm considering doing mine to the same OCD level as yours.
Thanks.

Don’t waste too much time polishing standard pipes. I done mine and as soon as you start up you can watch the pipes turn brown (unless you want to polish them after every ride) plus I don’t think Ron’s are standard
