Re: R1100s speedo not working
Hi,
This sounds like it could be the old "chaffed wires" problem. Take off the two front side faring panels and look for signs of damage to the wiring that runs along the front subframe folding the headlight assembly. The wires get trapped between the sub frame and faring panel and rub away the insulation tape. Look for signs of blue staining on the wires where the copper cables are exposed and oxidised. If you find a damaged section you need to splice in a new bit of cable and re-insulate with self amalgamating tape.
Hope this helps.

You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

I read somewhere - may have been this forum - that the sensor magnet in the rear hub can become detached.
My speedo on my 1100S (01) stopped, but functions now after I removed a surplus satnav loom from the bike. Maybe I nudged a wire back into place though?
Good luck, and please post when you resolve the problem?
Cheers

Did you resolve your speedometer issue? If so, how did you find and fix the fault? Mine is playing up again too on my 2001 1100S.
My sensor picks up from a castellated nut pressed onto the rear axle, but this nut can apparently work loose. My nut seems fine so I fear the chaffed cable may be the answer.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

Re: R1100s speedo not working
The castellated ring certainly can come loose because it happened to me. I had erratic speedo then it didn't work. I fixed the ring back in place and it caused no more trouble.

My speedo never failed , my comment was directed at the op , as above the castellated ring can come loose or trace the wiring connectors , i think one near the rear subframe can rot / chafe

Thanks very much - that’s very helpful. I’ve discovered that my sensor has had the cable connectors replaced and wrapped in tape. This is behind the right side panel where it enters the loom. I hope that cleaning this area up will resolve my problem.

My speedo is still erratic. Could you tell me how you fixed the castellated nut back in place please?
I’ve tried tapping it via the sensor hole - perhaps not firmly enough though.
A clear explanation would be very much appreciated?
Many thanks,
