Shaft problem

Postby BigRob » Sat Oct 27, 2018 5:14 pm

Whilst enjoying a spirited ride I have broken the bike it starts runs but has no drive. It moves forwards and backwards when in gear so I suspect the shaft or uj is broken.

I am not competent enough to fix and looking for a mechanic in the south near Newbury Berks...Any advice?

Have to suspect splines over U/J, I think.

No idea as to a BMW-ish Independant down there, I’m afraid.

If it's on the 12S it is most likely the UJ on one end of the shaft. It is actually an easy fix not above anyone that is confident with a spanner.
Expensive i'm afraid as the 12S shaft is not shared with other bikes and cost me £545 for the shaft from Balderstons.
Let me know if you need me to run through the repair but it only takes about an hour to replace.

i once had an issue that you might want to take a look at on my 1200s. Unknown to me at the time but the front bolt on the rear torque arm had lost its nut and bolt whilst i was riding. The arm was just sat in the forward mounting which is cup shaped and only caused an issue when i went over a crest and the lack of a mounted torque arm allowed the rear UJ to move off the diff splines and lost drive with the sound of shredded splines!

Not a massive job and i bought a second hand one from Motorworks. I did look at loads of 'perfect secondhand' ones which all seemed to come of GS's and were rusty and knackered so beware!

just wondered if yours could be the same as it was my 'spirited' riding over a crest that resulted in the issue!

If the torque arm bolt went - should be easy to see if that was the cause?

It’ll be missing.

(BigRob confused me with big rob, last night)

Studley’s Motorcycles pops up on google if you search for “BMW motorcycle independent hampshire Dorset”........
