Exhaust questions... Simple upgrade not going to plan!
Evening all.
After deciding that my R1100S was a tad too quiet, and that the standard cat assy looked far too heavy and bulky, I ordered a Danmoto cat eliminator pipe. Simple job right?
It appears that these old girls are getting on a bit now, and whilst wiggling the rear silencer off of the cat pipe, the following happened:
The scarcity of aftermarket silencers concerns me slightly, and I'm not keen on having to pay for a standard silencer. Before I embark on a fabrication project, does anybody know what other options I have available?

It has been a Looong time since I owned an 11S, ( just worked it out to be 11 years )
But if I recall correctly the STD end can(s) have a quite tortuous route after the up pipe exits the 1st silencer, so in effect if you could just seal the 2nd silencer off, you would not lose too much in the short term, this would give you time to pick up a used set of cans, IYSWIM?
Just to explain a little more, when an R1100S is running correctly, if you leave it running and look at the rear of the bike, you can see by putting your hand over each of the exhaust outlets that left is putting out a hell of a lot more than the right hand side.
I wouldn't recommend running around like this for too long, but it might buy you a little time to source a replacement end can(s)

Okay, now that my black coffee has kicked in, I can see that the up pipe is the one that has become detached from the end can(s)
so please ignore my previous post
Your best option is to source a good condition STD end can(s), people used to give them away as unwanted junk, but if you check ebay/german ebay(.de)
you may find something?

There's a couple of OEM ones on eBay for around £100, or you could hold out for an aftermarket one but you might be waiting a while! Probably much better options than trying to fix your old one.

Get the gas bottles or Tig welder out and fix it.
Then search for some cans or adapt some for another bike.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
I think I will repair the existing silencer as suggested, at least I can eek out the last of the decent weather for this year.
I believe I've found a suitable stainless oval silencer with offset intake and single centre exit which looks like it will be fairly easy to modify to fit. Never have been a big fan of 2 into 1, then back into 2 for no reason other than aesthetics!

I've had two identical breaks in the 100k odd miles that i've done . Both replaced with second hand items . Currently I have one spare that's cracked ...
I find the bike runs well with the y piece and standard cans . Any chance of posting up a photo of what you intend to use ? I'm always on the look out for potential replacements .
Gus on here fitted a standard looking bike can to the side a bit like a GS or jap inline 4.

Expensive I know, but does anybody have these and any feedback on them ?

I think they're made by GPR ( Italian ), of which there are quite a few others listed on ebay without decent pictures.

I have been considering a side mounted silencer. The item I was looking at is:

Dimension wise it looks good, provided the visible part is acceptable in terms of appearance.

Curious how much it weighs and also It suggests a straight through perforated tube which combined with a Y piece may be very loud!

Check further down in this section under Laser Exhausts - I didn't think the price for a new Laser system was too much

Re: Exhaust questions... Simple upgrade not going to plan!
I did consider the weight, but figured it probably couldn't be much heavier than the standard item!
As for noise, yes, I once had a TRX850 with remus straight through absorption silencers, and that could lay waste to a greenhouse from 50 yards!

Either on here on on pelican there is a thread of how to improve the flow in the standard exhaust. There is a lot of baffles and a 180 deg turn before some of the gasses goes to the second muffler. With some skill both cans can be opened and the baffles replaced, the internals improved and closed up again. If you doubt your skill a descent fabricator can do the work. Don't know what it will cost but probably cheaper than a Remus or Laser end can.
