Pretty sure that this starter is used on Moto Guzzi as well.
When I was researching / diagnosing, yes, I think there were some others that used it, but cant remeber now
They are pretty easy to dissasemble

I've followed this thread and guess what happened today?
Same thing, would turn over and all cockpit lights are flickering indicating flat battery.
Tried a couple more times and she started without hesitation.
Thanks for the good advise in above communications.
Will take mine off and investigate, too.
Must be a common fault on them - mine just turned to 51K - Twin spark model 2003
Mine did the same a couple of weeks ago but turned out to be an ignition coil, weird.

Did you ever sort out the starter?
I had the same problem a couple of years ago & it was the steel disc covering the reduction gear which had come adrift & was shorting out the armature windings (as in the link previously posted).
Fixed it but had more problems & it was due to the bits of plastic under the brush springs, I had somehow lost them & the reason they were there wasn't the soft carbon brushes, if you look at the photos in the link the spring is an obvious short circuit across the brushes when the plastic shims under the springs are missing, they are for insulation not to protect the end of the brushes!
So obvious I missed it!
Anyhow, if you need one I have a spare new armature in a box somewhere , just say.

Yes,
finally yesterday I've stripped the starter and found the retention plate touching armature winding and shorting out (burning small holes into plate).
Damage wasn't bad on winding and retention blade ( after 4-5 failure symthons on start up ).
I've managed to put retention plate back in the housing and used Araldite glue around edges.
The rest of the starter was in very good condition apart from being dirty and grease spread around armature/magnet area.
So I've cleaned everything up and re-assembled the starter.
Will go back on bike today - feedback to follow.
Generally,
the starter was in very good condition after 53 k miles apart from the loose retention plate.
I've read up about this and it is a common fault on the standard Valeo motors used across many Boxer models.
My recommendation is to service the starter motor couple of years as it is easy to take off bike and dismantle.
Here is how to do it with pic's

Well,
my magic hasn't worked.
I need to tap the end cap of the main housing for the starter to spin.
Without the lights go dim and nothing happens.Battery has 13.80 volts.
If she does turn she doesn't spin very fast, but turns engine over.
Will come off tomorrow again and having a look.

Check that you have the insulation under the springs for the brushes otherwise the spring short circuits between the brushes, I had the same problem & the insulators had gone adrift.
