New lid

Hi All,

I need to buy a new lid as my excellent BMW Sport Integral is finally wearing out. Not sure what to go for though. It's a few years since I bought the first one, so I'm out of date with what's good/bad etc.

I like the look of the new system 7 carbon, but I've not seen one in the flesh yet - I commute on a scooter, so I like the idea that the 'flip' part comes off to reveal an open face lid.. I've had a flip front one in the past (Schuberth), but I must admit the simplicity of a straight forward sports helmet also appeals.

Any recommendations? What's the 'best' make these days? I'm looking for quietness, lightness, comfort I guess.

Shark Evo One converts from a full face to an open face, and get good reviews:

Used a Shark Evoline for the past 5 years , I find it faultless , also used f/f Shark , also good quality.
I'm afraid the price of Arai/Shoei which over the years were my preferred lid made me seek out another manufacturer .
But its a very personal thing what one buys in the helmet/boot/leather et al department.

Stay away from HJC RPHA max. I bought one, good reviews and was initially impressed, but it leaks severely. Water comes through top vent (open or closed) and runs down internal visor.

It's been back to the distributor (Oxford) who put it in test chamber and they tell me it doesn't leak, so I really don't know what the copious amounts of water is? Must be my imagination. I am not the only one with this problem but HJC deny it. Bloody dangerous.

They won't replace it, so I will satisfy myself by highlighting this failure at every opportunity.

The only brands I would now consider for a flip are Shoei, Schuberth and BMW. In fact I might check out that system 6 deal. Few guys in my club have them and rate them.

I would not consider the Shark. Check out the sharp ratings. A guide only but the face guard only stayed in place 33% of the time. 2 time out of 3 your face would have been vulnerable, and I am far too pretty to deny the world my good looks.

I have an HJC RPHA 10, not a flip I know but I find it is a very good lid, far better than the shoei it replaced and half the price, Sue has a cheaper hjc, it has drop down sun visor and glasses groove( as does mine), had no issues with either helmet.

Indeed. My local dealer said the same thing. I'm tempted, but i think it looks a bit clunky. I'll probably go and take a closer look though.

I have the Shark Race-R Pro Carbon before that the Shark RSR2 Carbon, lightest,best fitting/ventilated helmets I've ever had.

I miss my Caberg Trip flip up.
Had a couple over the years.
Once, on a trip through France, everything was going wrong.
I got lost, dropped the bike, pissing down with rain, etc.
Everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong and I snapped.
Lost it completely.
Not proud of this but I took that helmet off, smashed it against a tree hard several times, and kicked it hard into a brick wall, again several times.
This went on for a good 5 minutes.
When I calmed down, I picked it up and it was still useable, nothing broken and the mechanism still working smoothly.
I can't believe it withstood that sort of abuse, but it did, and I carried on using it for the rest of the holiday without issue.
Of course I replaced it soon afterwards.

I'm absolutely stunned by the difference a "huge" field of vision makes to my riding experience and I'm sure, consequently, safety.
I'll never go back to peering through a letterbox slot at 80 mph !!
If it suits you, it's also a very well made and very comfortable lid for the money ?
My wife's got one as well because the moment she tried mine on she pronounced it the most comfortable lid she's ever worn.

I wouldn't begin to recommend a helmet, all very personal choice etc, but I would recommend a place to get one.

Prices are pretty standard with the `bigger brands` but just check what comes in the box, or doesn`t.........J&S accesories

BMW did something very similar, with a full face helmet that could be easily converted to open face.
It didn't catch on.
I agree in regard to visibility. but having seen the aftermath of a rider sliding down the road on his face in an open face lid, I'll take the extra protection of a full face every day

Caberg Flip was noisy and fell apart (without throwing it to the ground!!) within days of purchase.

I've always thought of myself as a Shoei man, confirmed in recent years when I bought an S2 schuberth. Good aero and quiet , nice features, internal sun visor, and good ventilation when on the move , but almost claustrophobic in traffic on warm days . (The low noise appears to be achieved by sealing around the neck area with the lining) . Additionally the snug new fit feeling has remained ( uncomfortably) over the years of use . In the interim ( yes , The schuberth really was that bad ) I ended up with a Shoei Qwest, Lighter (1520g actual weight for a size 62cm) as opposed to the neck pain inducing 1650g of the schuberth . The shoei however is surprisingly noisy and unstable especially when turning ( my head sideways).
So , end of last year , I was on the look out for a new helmet ( I run two helmets and when one reaches 5 yrs I tend to replace it)
Went to a local emporium tried a few old model AGV , nothing I liked . I was resigned to staying with Shoei. However I managed to try on an AGV K5S . What a revelation , fitted me perfectly , the lining is the most comfortable of any helmet I've ever owned , it's got my preferred double D ring fastener , internal sunvisor , superb aero even when turning my head at motorway speeds , very quiet , great peripheral vision ( although no good forward vision ( the top of the helmet obstructs ) for chin on tank sportsbikes) and actual weight of 1470g for a 62 cm shell. The main niggle(s) are chin vent is opened internally and despite having "eyewear compatible " labels inside the helmet It's taken me a few weeks to reliably locate my glasses on my ears at the first attempt I 'm not sure how it'll fare in terms of build quality but I've been wearing it almost continuously since purchase , so i'll have to cut it some slack if it becomes tatty sooner than it should.
The AGV K5S isn't in the Sharp ratings at the moment although I'm hoping it's similar to the older K5 4*, the Schuberth has very poor side impact ratings with 3 * and the older Shoei has 5*.

I had a Schuberth S3 (I think) as a get to work lid and found it totally the opposite - very noisy compared to my Shoei. Schuberth quality was second to none but hated the fit (which may have contributed to the noise)
