Help please can anyone confirm will engine crank with side stand down ? as when I road tested this bike today I had to put side stand up to crank engine ?
My old R1100S would only start with the bike with the side stand up. This has been discussed before and it seems that it only applies to bikes built around 2000 - 2002 and even then not all do this.

Thanks for reply, giving it some thought I am guessing that letting a air cooled bike idle on its side stand is not a good idea especially a boxer engine where rh cylinder could be starved of oil,

Hi Herb it was in neutral the only way bike will crank and start would be with side stand up or standing on centre stand if you push side stand down with engine running it cuts out engine as you would expect it to do,

I am glad it has this feature now.
Don't understand... why whould that happen? The oil system feeds oil to both cyl. Regardless of inclination. I can see a problem with oil not draining from the LH valve cover, but apparently, it's not a problem.

I beg to differ there must be a reason why engine will not idle on side stand.

Some do and some dont.
Mine does start and idle with the prop stand down (R1100S 2001 model).

Thanks for reply I am new to BMW brand and I am OK with its operation and will not be altering the way its works but if someone with a BMW tells me there one does not do this at least I am aware now that some do and some do not its good to know this.
It's a safety feature isn't it - stops you riding away with the side stand down?
Some people remove the switch to disable the feature.
