I've ordered a 611ELAST, but it won't be here till Wed/Thurs.

I'm sure I've got this right -

early bikes up to 7/2003 ish had the older-type alternator, non-freewheeling pulley, that used the standard 611 belt.

after that date, a freewheeling pulley was used (bikes with it have a small triangle embossed on the bottom of the front plastic cover) and this uses the 592.

A 611ELAST is actually 592mm long, this being marked on the belt itself, not the packaging, as 4PK611(592). This will fit any bike that originally had a 592, and the bikes that had a 611 by virtue of its ability to stretch. And its easier to fit, allegedly, because of the 'give' in it.

A few minutes with an allen key will remove the front plastic cover and in all probability the belt part number will be legible. This is probably the easiest way to determine the size.
I think your bike is an early '99 model . It will most likely have a standard micro v belt ( tensioned by an adjustable alternator) which will be the cheaper option although I'm sure the elast belt will work .
The couple of times I changed my belt purely as a preventive measure I just wound it onto the pulleys without adjusting, in less time than It took me to type this

Interestingly that pulley seems to be listed as NLA/ no longer available.? I wonder what happens if/ when it fails ? Can the older fixed pulley be fitted?

Elast type belts are common on automotive applications but the 592 appears to be BMW 1200 bike series only.
In the car world they are supposedly not interchangeable with standard belts , and they appear identical ( ie not elastic) to standard micro V belts. They may also require a special tool to guide them on .

I had my cover and belt off yesterday to change to Hall Effect Sensor, the belt was in very good condition (changed about 15k miles ago) but sadly there was no number on the belt.
2011 Harley-Davidson FLD Switchback - yeah, I know. I've always wanted one though...

I have the old belt from my 1200s - mechanic suggested keeping it under the seat just in case!!

These are ALL the numbers on the belt (not listed as a long number like this but I bet you knew that)
It's a Contitech 12.31-7681841 - 692637 4PK592

The last ones are the ones that count I suppose

My 12 has heated grips but no ABS

The eBay supplier for the 4PK611ELAST has mailed me to say its out of stock, so they've refunded me - I'm searching around for another one, but they're obviously not in commom usage.

I assume BMW introduced the 592ELAST and 611ELAST because the original 592 was such a pig to fit as a service item, albeit that dealers would have the special tool available anyway.

The old (non elas) 611 belt as fitted to all the 1993>onwards 1100 engines and pre servo 1150 engines can be fitted to the later engines without any problem, even if the bike has the alternator freewheel pulley.
