On a similar note, did anyone see the MCN article a couple of weeks back where they reckon BMW will be launching some more "retro" bikes along the same lines as the Ducati Scrambler and the like?

They reckon they'll be based on the Nine-T but cheaper.

Ah hhem! I resemble that remark!

I am fifty-something. I am currently sporting a beard, a chequered shirt and a NineT.
But then again, when I was 17 I had a bigger beard, a chequered shirt and an R100

It favours my neck, shoulder and knee joints. It's great for bimbling to the shops, thrashing through the Lake District, or riding to London. It has a more comfy seat and a greater fuel range than my tweaked 11S. If you drive at the speed of the 11S, it is more economical.

Last week I rode it to Donington, completed a noisy track day and rode it home. It's faster than I am, but would benefit from some sticky tubeless tyres, perhaps on some spare 12R wheels. The forks are unadjustable. The brakes are very impressive.

The BMW tank bag is OK and you can fit overtrousers in the tail. There's a socket in the loom for a satnav. The Wunderlich cockpit fairing is effective if a trifle expensive. I miss having panniers. I'm a little nervous of the DIY servicing, but no doubt I'll learn.

As an all-rounder it's shaping up quite nicely. And it looks nice too.

I do not use hair gel or male grooming products. A beard allows for an extra 5 mins in bed of a morning.

I know where you're coming from. On the surface the 9t ticks most of the boxes for me. It's lower, lighter, more upright, and easier to handle than my 12S and is the direction that I feel I am moving towards. I am 50 in a few months, I've had a beard pretty much constantly since I was 16ish (as yourself, I'm too lazy to shave) and I even have a couple of check shirts. I also wear Redwings and have turn ups in my jeans (small ones mind) am I a Hipster? Am I bollocks! (I'm interested to hear that you find the seat comfy over the 11S coz it doesn't look it) the plank seat irritates me but it does look good with the hump. Is the 9T for me? Quite possibly. Overall I think it looks great. Is it too 'fashion'? Possibly. Is it a good all rounder? There's a good chance it could be. Is the 12R a better bike? No question. Will I eventually have one? There's a very good chance of that. BLOODY HIPSTERS!!!

I rode the new R12R and the 9T back to back, much preferred the 9T.
In the interests of transparancy I too have had a short can't be arsed shaving type beard since my teens, one thats shown a quick buzz with an electric clipper every 5 days along with the rest of my head, although the top doesn't require much attention now.

That's interesting. What made you prefer the 9T? Sadly, my top doesn't require much attention either.

The 9T just felt a much purer riding experience, it's seating position and cornering just felt much more pleasant to me, but that, as ever is very personal. The R is a very nice bike, and the latest version is without doubt the best, but the 9T just felt so wonderful to ride, at any speed.The 9T felt like the bike they always wanted to build when they built the R, but never quite succeeded.But most of all it's the perfect balance of the engine and chassis that seem to just work together perfectly.You could happily spend an entire afternoon just going round and round the same roundabout.

As much as I adore the R9T the used prices are still higher than buying a new S1000R which is putting me off.

In the end if I do go for something simpler I'd probably rather get a previous generation R1200R and spend the money I saved on some aftermarket suspension and flatter bars.
