Forks and caliper query.

Postby Neil178 » Wed Sep 25, 2013 9:22 am

Hi Guys, my bike has the Brembo front calipers fitted (non abs) on scaby forks.
I was wondering if anyone knows if the later BMW calipers are any better?
A worthwhile upgrade at all?
It would also allow me to fit my Rizoma covers at long last! Can't beat a bit of bling! They don't fit on the Brembos.
From what I have found out, the mounting points are different so it's a chance to change the forks to a better set with minimum down time. I assume that they will fit from a later bike with no problems?
Whilst I'm batting ...... is the alternator belt change straight forward? No special tools required? T.I.A. :thumbright:

Not sure if the earlier calipers had the ceramic insert in the pistons. Stopping power, I suspect will be about the same.
Worthwhile upgrade??....... possibly not, but if it lets you bling up..............!!

Never done the alternator belt but it looks straightforward.
Do you have a copy of the repair manual?

If you mean the earlier Brembo badged calipers as opposed to the BMW badged (but still brembo) calipers, no they will not fit. The fork leg mounting lugs are different.

Give your current calipers a good clean and service with new seals.

Makes quite a difference!

While the later caliper mtg points are different i'm not aware that the later forks offer any advantages :?
Look away now if you like doing things by the book , anytime I've replaced the alternator belt I've just cut off the old one and wound on the new one ..

I've ridden bikes with both brembo stamped calipers and BMW stamped calipers. I thought the brembo stamped calipers felt like they were stronger but the BMW stamped calipers were much more progressive and not as grabby, I suppose it depends what you want.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Don't think I have a repair manual Mick, I may have bought one on cd years ago but can't find it. I normally only consult them once I have a few broken bits!
