+1 on the small group you know, unless it's a charity run type thing, preferably without twats.
My group is 6 if everyone is out, we all know each other well, and can ride almost wheel to wheel with compete confidence in each others abilities, and generally know what each other will do before it's done. No heroics, just steady safe, and fun. Amazing how many weekend warriors you'll pass when you can actually ride around corners  all without losing yer licence in the process too

I used to ride in a bike group back in my younger days. The usenet group myself an Mr. Parry read used to organise some massive rideouts on Sundays in the Home Counties.

But it was mental. The range of abilities was too great - with someone who has a bronze replica from the TT up front and newly qualified learners and some girlies at the back... how none of us ever got a ban on those rides, I'll never know.

These days, I'll ride with a handful of people I know a lot better - I know their abilities and how they're likely to behave on the road.

I don`t like big groups and prefer to know the people I am with, but thanks to the drop off system I really enjoyed the ride out at the welsh w/end and never felt under pressure to keep up, especially two up.

I understand riding with a group of friends.
People you know.
I guess that can be fun, but I don't get these huge rides.
To me it's a kind of herding mentality that draws people to these things.

Dosen't sound like it :( but your loss. There is a difference between a large charity rideout full of every type of lunatic, a ride with a group of friends and a forum ride out, where riders have much in common, and where a drop off system is used.
PS I don't actually have a herding mentality,I just enjoy a bit of two wheeled craic in a sensible fashion.

well said that woman!

There's always a good atmosphere at the 'trix weekends, because there's a large group of, as would be expected when there's 40+ people from all over the country, vastly varying personalities etc but with a common thread :)

So do you find it a bit odd, that some people like me, prefer riding as a loan pursuit ?
Don't get me wrong.
I do sometimes enjoy going out with one or two friends, but I don't seek out huge groups to ride with.
To me, that's just herding mentality.

I don't ciiticise anyone for lone riding, Its just not something I don't want to do all the time, I am quite happy doing my own thing half the time, the rest of the time I enjoy the social side of riding with friends, or even strangers who become friends.
I no more have a herd mentality , than you are a saddo that no one will bother with  Each to their own without making judgements I say. :)

I choose not to ride in huge groups.
It has nothing to do with no one bothering with me.
I've done it, and most of the time it's either tedious, or dangerous.
As I said, I'm not talking about a few friends riding together.
I have a few friends I ride with most weekends.
We've been doing it so long and know each other so well that we ride almost as one (pardon the cliché)
What I don't understand is the appeal of gathering together with hundreds of total strangers and lumbering around in a bloody great herd causing a lot of inconvenience for other road users.
Where's the fun in that.

I've done 3 Trixter meets in Moffat and I cannot think of 1 time when we were an inconvenience to any other road users. I tend to like to do my own thing but because of the drop off system you can ride in a group at your own pace and have a damned good social weekend. Wish I could get to more!!

Quite the opposite, it'd be so much better if the other road users would kindly stay off the roads and get out of our way :)

So Dave, are you coming to Wales next year? :)
