A guy in a club I belong too has (had) an old R1100RS.
The ABS packed in a few years ago, but as the brakes worked fine without it, he just carried on and removed the bulbs from the dash.
The cost of a replacement unit was nearly 2 grand fitted.
More than the value of the bike.
Anyway,
He just had a bad crash,
A driver turned across his path.
He panic braked, lost the back and went down.
His bike ended up wedged under the car.
He got only a broken wrist thank God.
Anyway, he now has a problem with his insurance claim.
Some bright spark with the drivers insurers has sussed that his bike has abs, and had the loss adjuster inspect the system and yep, they found that it wasn't working (fault stored on ecu) and that the bulbs had been taken out.
His claim has been denied.
Apparently, if abs is fitted, it should be fully funtional and if it is not, no matter how well the brakes work without it, it is classed as riding with defective brakes.
That means unroadworthy, which null and voids your insurance.
Claim denied, and the driver is now claiming from his insurance for damage to the car.
It's not looking good.
His counter argument was that the bike passed it's MOT without issue but he shot himself in the foot with that one, because he'd removed the bulbs, meaning he'd technically decieved the MOT tester, who may also be in the shit for not spotting it.
Did you know that flashing abs warning lights mean a fail ?
I didn't.
I can't find anything to show that the same rules apply to bikes, but I see no reason why they wouldn't.

I think he was unlucky to have had his bike sussed out so comprehensively but it goes to show that insurers will try to find any way they can to avoid paying out, and with abs becoming more and more common on bikes, insurers are now more aware of this.
Of course we have the option of turning off the abs, but so I wonder how that would stand up.
Could be interesting.

Some people who have removed the abs ( GS models) informed their insurers, and got it accepted (removed- not defeated).

Always a bit of a risk:

Informed and Accepted
Rejected and noted as "refused cover"
Not informed- then try to claim.

You play the odds.......

Makes sense to me....

If it should have ABS, it should have ABS. By removing it you've reduced the safety of your bike and increased your chance of having a crash. Not telling your insurane is asking for it IMO.

That being said, I'm currently riding without ABS untill it's fixed.....

Glad your friend came off lightly in terms of injury though.

On the same subject mine doesn't have abs but how do I know if it did originally? (It's a 98 1100s)

Great link that, I now know my BCR is a genuine replika without ABS.

My BMW dealer told me that the ABS unit on my R1200C needed to be replaced.
I asked a smaller independent dealer I know to look at the bike.
He phoned me later that day and said "all sorted, you just needed a new battery"
Evidently, BMW abs systems are very battery sensitive, and if there is even a slight weakness with the battery, it'll register as a fault and the abs will shut down.
He must have been right because it's worked fine ever since.

Here's another conundrum that I've always wondered about.

When my brother got killed the police checked the tyre pressures on his bike and noted they were not to BMW spec. However, what they didn't note was they were to the tyre manufacturers spec.

For example BMW pressures for the R1100S in the ownera handbook are way different from the tyre manufacturers who currently all specify 2.5 bar fr and 2.9 bar rr

Now in the event of something happening does this disparity give insurers a wriggle space?
