Rear shock lower mounting bolt/nut

As above, have somehow misplaced it on a strip down. It's m10x1.25, 65mm long. Question is, can I use any bolt as a replacement as long as its decent quality and the right size, or should I buy from the dealer. Wouldn't have thought it'd be expensive from the dealer, but I don't pass it every day.

Give motorworks a ring I'm sure they'll have one. Don't think it's a special bolt or anything.

Any bolt that is a 12.10 tensile strength would do the job.
How ever plated bolts that have not been de-embrittled after plating are not good enough, I personally would get an original

1.25 pitch is classed as fine pitch on M10, so will be a little bit more difficult to find, but not impossible. Go with a decent grade, 12.10 is very high strength and stick with the fine pitch. (Asking for an M10 bolt without stipulating fine pitch will get you the standard metric coarse pitch of 1.5mm).

I'm guessing the bolt head is also flanged?

Thanks folks. Original it is then. Motorworks definitely have them, it's just that the Yorkshireman in me baulked at paying 6 quid with carriage for a bolt like that. (Ha! Though I've just spent nearly £60 on brake pads I thought I needed.......but didn't). Oh well, they'll keep.

I have done about 20k on a stainless allen head bolt located in there.

That's the thing about stainless, or at least my perception of it. My bikes pretty tidy, but some of the bolts/fasteners are starting to let it down a bit. I'm tempted to go for stainless replacements where I can, but am wary of what to use where. There seems to be conflicting advice whenever this crops up. BTW, the cost of Ti makes its use out of the question.

A fortunate forum member worked as an air frame fitter for RAF and witnessed the sad waste of use once only Ti bolts. I believe most of the bolts on his R1100S had been replaced with this military waste. Most of mine are now stainless. And a few alloy.

I would agree totally with Bob on that. BMW obviously regard the shock bolts as being something special. I have just bought a new lower shock bolt for the front of an HP2 Sport and it came individually boxed and was fairly expensive. However, although it is the same overall size as the equivalent for the R1200S, it does have a much longer shank. The R1200S one is still expensive, just marginally less so.

Despite the existence of S/S ones still going strong, they will be perfect until....................!!!

If there is anybody who knows anything about S/S on this forum it is Bob.

Bob, as the expert perhaps you could compile a list of the bolts we can safely replace with stainless - when you have a minute! Reading these threads (no pun intended) has opened my eyes to what can and cannot be used

Think I have my original as a spare as I replaced mine with a new one when I fitted the Ohlins (think it was recommended to replace). You are welcome to it if you want it (assuming I can find it).

If you do a search on my posts you will find the original list back in 2000
As for what is safe or not I have used stainless replacements on just about every bolt on an 1100S, with the exception of shock mounting.
Discs,calipers etc etc.

It is a case of do you feel comfortable using stainless steel bolts, real terms I suppose they should not be used in load bearing places

Thanks for the offer, but the new one from Motorworks has arrived and is fitted. I'll probably find the one I lost in the next couple of days and end up with a spare myself.

Thanks Bob. I have A4 stainless allen head bolts in brake and clutch MC covers - look much better than the crosshead - got then so cheap off the bay it must have cost more to post them than I paid for them. I'll get around to replacing more as time goes on
