picking up bike from mike in cleckheaton on sunday. phoned carol gnash insurance, advised to tell them of mods non standard seat, policy shoots up nearly £80!!! to £255, in my wisdom i tell them i have one years no claims. wo and behold policy goes up to £268 !!!!!!! and only aviva will underwrite it, correct me if im wrong but aint it supposed to come down??? and can anyone recomend anybody else to insure with, any advice guidance appreciated. cheers

This issue is becoming alarming. I advised CN of the significant mods last year, it seemed none set off alarm bells to the agent at the time. A pal has just gone through his renewal and realised CN had never recorded his mods from last year, so he asked for them to be stated on his document, ultimately they were not recorded in print, but his premium did not go up. Now where do I begin with my list of mods? The EBC brake pads? The Asda brake fluid? The Maxxis tyres? It has become daft.

The bottom line(s) is/are this:
1. Modding a bike, regardless of any relevance in an 'accident' without informing the insurers could mean no pay-out in the event of a claim.
2. Modding a bike, regardless of its effect on the potential for it to cause an accident, and informing the insurers means higher premiums.
As always, it's a win-win for the insurers. Any way that they can worm out of paying out, they'll find it.

Had a policy renewal come through from antie Carol for Jan but forgot to renew (I thought I had but when I came to tax the bikes it seems I hadn't )
As more than has elapsed since the insurance ended I am effectively 'new business' so quote included broker's fee.
First quote from CN came in at £480 !! (two bike policy, 8 years no claims, protected NCB, breakdown cover etc). And this with a £500 excess!!
Finally managed to beat them down to £430. Didin't have time to phone around and I do believe that CN is probably this best insurer out there........hopefully
I know the HP2 will push the premium up a bit but bloody hell!! they must have seen me coming.
And the worst thing is last year I did about 2000 miles which works out at 21.5p/mile just for insurance
Note to self, get organised before next year

Mine's £240 if I recall correctly, for the F650, the BCR, the R80RS and the K1200GT all on the same policy.
What I particularly like, especially having previously been fleeced by Bennetts, is whenever I add, change or remove a bike from my policy I do it myself on their portal and it costs me nothing.

I got TTFT for 170 for the K1200GT SE (no mods). Went Fully comp for £290 in the end, not sure if its worth it though....
I'm on 8 years no claims and business use. With Hastings.
I did get the renewal "quote" (that would have automatically renewed if I hadn't phoned them), that had me down as zero no claims for £700ish on third party only! They where phoned up and corrected very quickly!

It does seem weirdly inconsistent. Maybe there's some other factor, like age, that sets it all off. When I'm insuring my "classic" aka "old" bikes, my response to the mods question is "probably" - how would I know - the bikes are so old".
Thinking of taking the same approach with the S.
In terms of "none pay outs", I thought, I stress thought, that if the mods aren't a "significant contributory factor" in the incident, then your third party cover was unaffected.
Anyone know for sure?

When I had my off I got the bike recovered 160 miles home and could have
Got a hand to de-mod it (I had a broken elbow) before the assessor came to see it...
