Front Wheel Spindle

Does anyone have a spare front wheel spindle.
I need a pattern to loan to a customer of mine who makes parts for F1 racing teams.
I might be able to get them made out of Titanium.
Also does anybody know of a manufacturer of Titanium rear wheel bolts.
I could also get these manufactured but I need to know the material spec.
Standard Titanium spec is called 6al 4v, = 6 parts alluminium 4 parts vanadium which i beleive is too soft and would not have sufficient shear value.

TITANIUM = JUST A VERY EXPENSIVE TALKING POINT AND POTENTIALLY SHEARED BOLTS. i THINK I'LL TAKE A MISS.

Its only expensive if you buy products from a company that want to make a living from it, hence the request for a spare front wheel spindle to use as a pattern.

Sheared bolts ? lets all watch Formula one this year and see the wheels fall off, hence the request to find out which grade to use.

Talking point yeah.

If I am going to have bits made for my S and any one else that may be interested I make them from stainless generally I dont like rust flavour.

The guy that does my machining happened to say if I am going to make you bits from stainless steel wouldnt you rather have titainium, hum I will have to think which I would rather have.

Well my comments were aimed at Babble really,as for Titainum on my S Hmmmm, you'd be hard pressed to find a non titainium nut and bolt on it with the exception of the wheel bolts and washers,i attempted to source them from the States through a friend just for the hell of it,and they turned the idea down flat,so it's Pack Parts!!! again,i have to say buying titainium bits is one of lifes sobering experiences when you open the bill for 90 quid and find three filler plugs in a jiffy bag!!!!!!!.

I realised that your comments were for Babble.

As I have made this contact through work I thought that I might be able to get aome bits made at reasonable costs.

Hi Bob

Funnily enough had this conversation with Gus a couple of weeks ago,the problem is the cost of the tools needed to machine Titainium because of it being so tuff, and then when i got a friend to inquire about getting things from the States the Americans got the wind up about liability, and knowing what the Germans are like with the TUV etc and thats why i grinned and bared it price wise.

As far as the wheel spindal is concerned,to be honest i have enough hassle with haveing a front Dymag i sure as hell don't want it any lighter,it sounds fun,but can be a reall pain in the arse haveing the front wheel up around you ear hole when you don't want it,although i have to say most of the problems are when i'm two up(which is most of the time)

Although as i put up a previous posting when i had some bits come some months ago the nut that goes on the end of the wheel spindle really is a work of art!!!!.

Serious ques - why go for a Ti wheel spindle? It'll have virtually zero effect on steering because it's right in the centre of the rotational axis. As to its effect on the bike regards overall weight? Hmmm...it's probably below the centre of gravity anyway.

I've seen Bob's stainless stuff and it's seriously nice. Going to Ti is a bit beyond me though.

Re Chris's reply
You have hit the proverbial nail on the head, Titainium is very difficult to machine because it is so damm tough.
It just so happens that I sell carbide tooling, so I can do a bit of a deal with one of my customers on the cost front.

Re Richards reply

The only real reason I mentioned Titanium was not for the weight aspect but for the finish point.

As you said there is a lot of St Steel on my bike, I have a policy of substituting anything made of plated steel for St St only because it does not corrode like good old BMW OE.

unsprung weight, only reason really, anti-corrosion is the same for stainless steel or titanium, however there are varying grades of stainless which some corrode with certain chemicals and others don't.

Personnally i'm not prepared to watch F1, since there's always the minute hand of the clock to watch race round, but anyways. fairplay, with titanium, it's not gonna corrode, and indeed, i've spent a good deal of time making stainless parts for bikes, and titanium, yes is tastier than ss, but when it comes to making stuff like wheel bolts (if not spindles) as you've said you'll need to be very careful, and sure about grade. But the point is, are you really gonna be able to tell any differance in performance? Maybe you can, but i know i cant. Shave a 1/4 of a second off your ride to work and win huge prise money for doing it? But i can buy a lifetimes supply of shiny brand new wheel bolts for a fraction of the cost of a few Ti washers. I'll spend that accumulated saved money diving in malaysia this summer and use that as a talking point instead. (you gotta let me have a moan - i'm just a bit jealous, and a bit mystified as to why)
