Fitting Carbon Yoke Protector

Postby The Doc » Sat Feb 16, 2008 12:46 am

Evening lads

Sorry if this sounds a bit basic but I'm a complete numpty when it comes to technical stuff but I received my Fibre-Lyte yoke protector today and am having trouble fitting it as I have higher bars that are fitted above the top yoke and therefore the protector will not just slot straight onto the yoke.

It looks like I'm gonna have to get the bars off to get it on, I undid the handlebar clamps and after unscrewing the 2 plastic protectors that covet the top of the forks I couldn't get at the two nuts that became visible after unscrewing the prectors. My sockets weren't long enough to get to them.

Do I need a special tool to get at the nuts or am I doing something wrong to get the handlebars off...............I guess I should have bought a Yoke protector that just sticks on around the handlebar housing but wanted a genuine bit of Carbon Fibre which I paid £22 for the privelige.

As I said, I'm sorry if this is basic but any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Dont know what nuts your talking about but pretty sure you dont need to be touching them.

After youve undone the clamp bolt on the bars, the only thing that should hold the bars on is a wire clip right at the top of the fork tube.(No1 in Pic)

On the low bar bikes there is another bolt that goes into the fork bridge from underneath, but as youve got the high bars you dont have that.

Heres a pic( Of Low bar bike)

Cheers Timbox....I will be revisiting the bars later after I've been out for a blast. I've a good mind to just send the yoke protector back to Demon Tweekes and get one that doesn't need to go around the handlebars.

WORD OF WARNING.

Don't undo BOTH yoke clamps at the same time. The forks are not sprung and just slide freely in the tubes. By undoing both at the same time the bike will collapse in a heep.
If you must undo both then make sure you jack the bike to hold the front end up.

Cobster.......

Thanks for the word of warning but I had already undone both of them earlier. The bike didn't collapse :? , I don't know if having it on the centre stand helped.

I managed to cut and file the Yoke protector down to size and got the bars & clips back on and clamps done up without any further problems and it looks now the dogs b's.

I'm glad the bike didn't collapse in a heap on the floor, that would have been complete disaster (f***ing relieved springs to mind), but I shall bear it in mind if I have to do it again.

Thanks for the advice everyone, being a newbie I can't believe how friendly everyone on here is............restores my faith in humanity!!
