Hello everyone
well after a steady running indicator back to a strobe machine sods law the MOT was today just about to go off when i saw the dashboard disco happening all agian.so i have stripped the bike down to its tank and had a good check around nothing looks wrong all is tight and where it should be. but something very odd is happening in a pattern that i hadnt noticed before im glad it has because it may shed light on the problem at hand here goes

ignition on-no engine-no lights=flash normal

ignition on-no engine-full lights are on=disco both sides when you switch between

ignition on-engine on-as soon as it is revved=disco
and dosent stop even when throttle is released it just goes mental.

does this sound like an earth problem i have had this problem with the original indicators aswell as another two sets i have tried from a suzuki bike could you tell me how to find or test for this problem please i would appreciate it
as you can tell me and my BigMechanicalWhoe have not been seeing eye to eye lately.

Ooooh, sounds like a voltage-level matter.

Ya see, with very little drain from the battery all is fine, put lights on the voltage drops and the relay drops more current than usual and it flashs mad.

However, this is where the fun starts..... could it be a regulator/rectifier unit shot on the alternator that is over-voltage-ing at present resulting in a cooked battery and other items as well??? if you can check the voltage at the accessory socket or something I would recommend this to determine the voltage in the system and battery at:

i) Ignition on, no Engine, no Lights
ii) Ignition on, Lights on, no engine
iii) Ignition on, Lights on, Engine on

We can then start to summise whether it's something else that is screwing your system or whether it's the indicator network themselves.

Are all the bulbs the correct wattage?

all bulbs are correct w's checked and double checked
minivin asked for
) Ignition on, no Engine, no Lights 12.72v
ii) Ignition on, Lights on, no engine 12.30v
iii) Ignition on, Lights on, Engine on 14.60-14-50v

battery is a landport 12v 18 ah
ive just put it back on charge so i can do more readings later if you like the battery is usualy charged up once every three weeks or so with an optimate 3 and this makes no difference.

i also took these readings with the indicators on

position of direction is as sat on bike
straight on to battery
nothing on at all 12.86v
ignition on only 12.72v
indicator on normal flash 12.49-12.39v perfect both sides
same agian with lights on discod after about 4 flashes left 12.15-12.13v
the right was well behaved today and did eventualy disco after about twenty flashes right 12.17-12.11v
engine tick over was 13.30v
revved to about 2500 was 14.50v
revved indi on and lights on was 14.40v
if there is anything else please let me know thank you.

well we can safely say your charging system and battery are fine as if it went over 15V with engine blipped or dropped to 10V without engine then it would have said the alternator for the former and battery for the later.

Time to really dive into the indicator side of the electrics

what is next to check and how is it tested anyone know please??
