left hand heated grip woes again

Postby tripe » Wed Feb 28, 2007 4:07 pm

the replacement ofthe heated grip that failed in December failed again last week and was changed under warranty thank goodness. Stephen at Jap and German did it. When he took the grip off there was a fair amount of water inside that had found its way in via the same hole that feeds the wire in. A bit of silicone has sealed it now.
With the bike standing outside a lot on the sidestand we suspect that was how so much water got in and then did the damage.

Perhaps it is this that causes the higher failure rate of the left grip rather than excessive clutch action :?:

Not sure of the heated grips on the newer models but i know when i had an old R65, the left grip failed basically cos it was ceramic and the right hand grip was metal - the ceramic grip cracked when the bike was hoiked onto to centre stand - as a general note - watch the A 69 once you are into Cumbria - new greed cameras and parking places for stationary greed cameras are appearing!

so what is wrong with the grips on the left? in december i had fireworks and a bonfire from it!

it burnt itself out on my first go with it. luckily caught it in time and got the dealer to change. the new left doesn't seem as hot.

tried a friends £40 oxford heated grips and they were superb compared to the BMW ones.
