The last couple of winters I have used some Motorex Fuel Stabiliser in the bikes that are not ridden over winter. I know that this made the restarting and initial riding of my XB9R Buell easier post storage, when I owned it. I have therefore continued with the practice.

I guess the best alternative is to remove the ethanol from the fuel - mixing fuel with a measured volume of water and allowing the water to absorb the ethanol, then draining off the contaminated water/ethanol mix. But that means an outlay for equipment and dealing with large volumes of fuel (and waste water/ethanol), which I am not keen on.

In certain areas of the country (UK) there used to be a reasonable chance that ESSO Super was not infected with Ethanol, though I think with time this is not as likely any more..

I have used fuel stabiliser this winter. primarily for my 6 carb boxer engine F6C. I bought from ebay, Lucas Fuel Stabiliser 237 ml bottle 30ml treats 3.8 litres of fuel. It states it is suitable for all gasolines 2t and 4t engines. I also bunged some in my lawn mowers. Followed the instructions add stabiliser then brim the tank . Run the bike till the fan comes on. Not too worried about my fuel injected bikes but the racer has a steel tank, Don`t fancy down time doing a six carb overhaul this riding season. It is not exactly inexpensive stuff.

Thanks Jez, ja, I saw some thing on yew choob a while ago, this chap mixing water, then decanting the waste .

I'll try the Motul stuff, saw it advertised on a forum some where, but wondered, before I stuff it into my Suzuki .

Some Repsol stations sell 98 octane here , but I'd guess these days there is a percentage of ethanol in that too .

Surely removing the ethanol affects the octane rating?

I use Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer in all our bikes, mowers and chainsaws. Never had a problem with goo from ethanol in the petrol over the winter.

I’ve been using Aspen in a couple of my classics and they always start fine after being stood all winter.
Bit of a faff in that it’s not an additive so you have to run to empty but better than cleaning the carbs every year.
Local garden machinery place stocks it.
