Fuel Remnants ?

Last year I managed to ride past the last filling station on the motorway and by the time I found fuel the range on my GS showed 7miles
Yesterday I decided to blow the cobwebs off and went for a bimble.
After 80 miles parked the bike up to have a swift coffee (from flask) then headed towards home.
Range showed 55miles, note to self fill up soon!
Bike started coughing and popping and refused to go above 40, then the 'General Warning' triangle appeared.
Anyway, spluttered and wheezed (bike not me) for 20 miles thinking it would expire somewhere in the back of beyond, and wondering if I have the AA card in my pocket.
With 35 still showing I filled the tank and rode home without a problem, no fault, nothing, so:
Do I remove the tank and give it a clean? Or take it to stealer and read the fault code ?
