Refitting drive shaft to gearbox output

Hi,
I’m trying to put my bike back together after what I thought would be a simple job of changing the swing arm bearings. Removing the swing arm and drive shaft have proven to be one of the most challenging mechanical problems I have ever attempted and I have tackled a few. I have encountered problems all of the way and reassembly is proving a nightmare!
The driveshaft is supposed to push over a snap ring circlip located in a groove in the gearbox output shaft. The drive shaft cannot be hammered on due to two floppy u-joints. There is no way the drive shaft will push over the snap ring the groove isn’t deep enough to allow it to compress into it. I cannot see how you can fit the circlip after installing it as the U-joint will be in the way.
Any help please!!!!!
Thanks
Jon
