new to me R1100s - bodge fixing #1: Rear light

Hello,

thought I'd share my bodge-fixing adventures with my new-to-me R1100s.

When I got it home after it was delivered to me at work, I realised the rear light wasn't working properly (the brake light was fine).
I popped off the rear lense and found a load of tinfoil and metal, and a strangely located bulb...

Ordered a replacement from Motorworks, popped off the panels & fitted it last night.
attached pics so you can see the extent of the bodge

thanks, yeah - it's pretty straight forward doing this sort of thing.
I'm sure there'll be other things...
it's got an HID front light and I have no idea what the situation with any of that is, so that's on my list of things to poke about with

The Hid will just be plug and play with the ballast secured near by. If you are going to remove it just unplug and replace with the new lamp.

Yeah, i have spotted the ballast stuff zip tied in the fairing, I need to have a read-up on it before I decide whether or not to remove it (I'll probably keep hold of it to be honest, it's REALLY bright!!!)

What a crackin bodge, I love these tools who fook things up, ultimately a proper repair has to be carried out. keeps the cogs of industry lubricated. He was probably pleased with his handiwork too.

Hid headlight "WHY ?" does one live miles up a farm track road? use the bike for lamping? Riding in darkness a lot? can not see the point for normal riding. I would bin it, it may have Bodger Bods signature all over it.

Please keep us amused with any more crackers you find

i'm a fan of hid's,especially when you hit the a702 after being on the m6 for hours!

yeah, a classic bodge with this rear light!!!
someone had clearly drilled through the lamp casing to remove the bulb and its clip (my guess is because they'd fitted a bulb with slightly different pin config and and couldn't get it out).

Re the HID - there's probably not going to be loads of night riding, but there's a few bits of road round here I use regularly with no street lighting - over the South Downs and along the coast road - so I will see... and report back if it looks like a bodge!!!

I'd hold onto the HID , as you say they are like night and day versus a standard bulb and still better than the current crop of Xenon filament bulbs.
You're probably aware , but make sure it's all switched off before you go looking at the wiring ( serious high voltages when it strikes up)

I am a great believer in the fact that 9 out of 10 drivers won't see you what ever you do but having the brightest front light on in daylight cannot hurt your chances of being seen.

I read somewhere about a study in a country that concluded that having a headlight on during the day on a motorcycle actually caused more accidents!
Apparently the brain determines the speed of an object by noting the change in size over time. If its getting bigger quickly, its moving fast. The act of having a bright headlight masks the outline of the object so making it more difficult to judge speed, hence more motorists pulling out into the path of fast moving motorcycles.
Not sure how true it is but i'll stick with the bright headlight myself in the hope that they at least know something is coming, even if they can't work out how fast. I'd also rather stand in a court and say I had a 55w lamp lighting the way rather than nothing!

yeah, I always stick my lights on during the day - and here, where its a bit hilly, I am always getting blinded by Chelsea tractors (or whatever they call them now), but I do agree it's better to have something on rather than not, anything to make people question what is going on, and full beam to really try and *help* those who just did something stupid and couldn't see me for some weird reason...

there's also another, smaller unit but it doesn't say anything on it - this, I think connects to the bulb - not looked yet.
