24k service, whats tha' then?

Postby minivin » Mon Feb 07, 2005 7:14 pm

Presently doing some college work and can't be fussed with digging the big folder out with the servicing details, is it all the oils and much else?

And the fuel filter... bugger of a job apparently. The only painful part of it for me was paying the dealer :D

ah I think the filter can last until 48k ;) think I might actually look in the good book now as designing a State Variable filter of 130dB/decade roll-off is doing me head in

Actually the filter ain't half as bad as it sounds, did mine when i put my bigger tank on,was exspecting a horror but was very straight forward, takes a little time but hardly rocket science.

Have just done my fuel filter too. Peace of mind. 17 000 miles. I cut the old one open to check - absolutely perfect. To get the tank plate off, the inner two hoses that connect the overflow and breather near the filler have to be pulled off (they go back o.k.). Then much wiggling and fiddling to get all the stuff on the back of the plate out through the hole (only just) more origami to swap the filter (directional) and worse to get it all back into the tank. Important detail No. 1. Clearly mark feed & return hoses BEFORE the tank gets separated from the bike. I used dots of touch up paint, two colours. No. 2 Drain the tank - I pulled the balance pipe off to do this, and at the same time disentangled it from the wiring loom at the back of the tank near the frame. Dont switch anything electrical nearby while doing this and turn off the fan heater. Useful point No. 3, mark the tank plate before it comes off, so it goes back over the correct holes. And No. 4, dont try to over tighten the plate bolts. Vines kindly supplied me with a new plate gasket that was too big (about 2mm), which would not seal. Now got a clean cylinder barrel.
Oyster. 1999 R1100S. Almost original.

When i wanted to drain mine, looked at takeing the balance pipe off,to much hassle, put petrol can on floor put a big funnel in and turned the tank upside down into the funnel, hey preston, then blew it out with an air line.

All of which was done outside!!!

Also anyone going to the trouble of doing the job in the first place fit quick release pipe fittings as per Lloyds suggestion and next time takeing the tank of really is a 5 minute job.

ok - it was :

all the plugs (4), all the filters(3), oil, valves and balance, brake check, and testride.

Turns out my discs are under thickness (by 0.1mm all round) after only 24K - hmmm - I'd have expected them to last a bit longer.

I also had the rear pads replaced (without asking me  ) but got 10% off the labour cos I made a fuss (a fiver - wow).

Crankcase breather pipe was replaced (it had split).

All in, including 2 days on a 650GS (and not including the mechanic not appreciating my "crappy tank cover" and requesting more time for removal and replacment (it takes 10 minutes) : £391.10

not bad compared to some of the prices I've seen bounded about, but I'll still be doing the lubes and valves me self as it aint anything clever :)

Once I start having the time to do my own servicing (and once it's out of warranty) - I will do it myself - just don't have the time at present. :(

FWIW - The discs on my boxercup that was stolen were "worn past their limits" after only 13000mls. It was still under warranty & I kicked up a serious fuss. They made mention of them having to have their "area engineer" over-see the warranty issue, I stood firm & got fronts & rear disc replaced. This was with Vines too.

My current S has only 7000 miles on it but already the discs are wearing??!

Anybody else had an issue with this?

I always thought discs were wear parts :? Must be all the town riding that does it

Hmmm - is it worth me asking about warranty? - 24K isn't overly bad is it? - I've had discs wear in less mileage on a ZXR400
