Apparently you can if you chuck the (graphite?) filter, bend the pipe up as far as it will go and drill a hole in the tank filler neck, as shown in the pic.

I posted the link because all you need is one hole drilled , it doesn't increase the capacity , it just lets you fill the tank more quickly. I wasn't knocking you posting the link

Fair enough mate. One M6 hole on the oposite (high) side to the sidestand is all I've drilled. As I understand it though this 'mod' does allow approximately 1.2 litres (a very useful extra 10-15 miles?) more into the tank because air that is trapped above the low filler neck is a allowed to escape thru the aformentioned hole. As soon as it stops raining and is dry enough to ride to our local fuel vendor I can test the result by filling to the bottom of the filler then making a note of how much more I can get in. Perhaps a fellow Trixter who has been running with this mod can enlighten us both.

It is a useful mod, but only if you are setting off on a long journey, if you only brim it and go home you will find several ££'s worth of fuel on your garage floor( unless you immediatly put it on the centre stand)

The breather pipe (has that plastic lump on the end) is wrapped around the outside of the filler neck. Inappropriately positioned drillings will puncture it, allowing fuel to leak at anything over a third tank full. Filling to the brim will also allow fuel to leak via the breather due to the motion of the fuel while riding, but not as much as filling to the brim before going in to the café for a coffee and leaving the bike on the side stand. Given enough time, about a gallon will siphon out in that scenario. I have drilled three holes, bottom, middle and top. This allows faster filling and I can choose what level to fill to according to the distance I am about to ride. The centre hole is my favourite and allows me an easy guide for mpg checks.

If any one needs a spare filler like in the picture- I have one I got from Motorworks - its unused and needs a home.

I did this mod to my R1100RS some years back and can get an extra 2 litres in which with the tank brimmed means an extra 20 miles range. As has been said above you need to be careful if filling then going for a cuppa or you may come back to a puddle under the bike as the fuel expands.

All sounds a bit dangerous to me!

You may not have a puddle of fuel to come back to, you may not have a bike

Plus if it's splashing out of the breather as you ride, what's the point?

I cant see it being worth it for an extra mile or two, I have never run out of fuel.

To me, the main advantage is that you can fill the tank without having to dribble the final half gallon in like a prune.

But you can then overfill; just above the bottom of the filler assembly seems about the limit. I keep a Sigg fuel container going which I put underneath the breather if I think it's going to expand too much (one statistic reckoned +10% is possible?). Contents of Sigg then go into the mower, cleaning brushes etc; or I forget about it and knock it over next time I take the bike off the stand ...
