I have a compressor driven vacuum bleeder which works great. You are welcome to have loan of it I am in Slough.
Or if you like come over Saturday afternoon and I could give it a go.

When bleeding brakes I always remove the bleed nipple and smear the thread with either red rubber grease or copper slip then put the nipple back in finger tight this stops air being sucked back in via the thread

Hinterachse is indeed rear axle - DIfferential (Diff) is ... surprise surprise, differential. I have a couple of German/ English technical dictionaries if anyone gets stuck with German translations

Thanks for all the suggestions & advice.

I've cracked 'em :D

Someone on my other forum suggested that if the weather seals were full of crud they would be prevented from advancing properly and thus you'd never get any proper pressure build up. Thought about it and the logic seemed correct. So i popped each piston individually, stripped out the weather seals, which were ALL full of white gack & dust. And as I progressed the pressure came back into the system! Brakes are now brilliant!

For the future I'm going to look into fitting either the Brembo callipers that were the alternative factory fitting, or potentially a pair of Nissins.

Alright chap
good to see your still on a rocky , Not destroying landrover defenders anymore (i think that was you) but it was ages ago!

good to see you have fixed the problem , i never understood why BMW ever fitted the tokico calipers to bikes , there no better and just fall apart in the winter . from memory the brembo calipers are a straight swap for the fork legs , but you will need new discs , they will fit the wheels no issue though

if i had seen the thread sooner i could have told u the calipers were buggered , you would be amazed how many bikes are riding around with the same issue , see them just about every day .

i have a good set of calipers here (brembo) , just no discs , well i do but there slightly warped so not much use

I've had Tokicos for years (including my ZXR400 something like 17-18 years), ridden all through winter and never had this spongy issue before. I've had the weather seals fill with corrosion and lock up random pistons, but it's never had this effect before. I've also never seen it happen so quickly! I replaced all the seals only 10,000 miles ago, last April. :(

What's different about the discs? As far as I can recall, the "Evo" upgrade was specifiying 320mm discs (just like all modern Jap bikes), with either the Brembo or Tokico callipers. I'll be looking through the fiches anyway.

Would you sell the callipers? What were they from, an R-S?

blimey my memory works! thats surprising

i have run a few bikes like you have through winters and for some reason the ones fitted to bmw's do seem to fall apart worse than most ! you only seem to get the spongy feeling after replacing a set of seals and not making the seal seats pristine! almost like polishing them! have had a few issues with calipers in the past and had to give up and replace them.

off the top of my head i can only remember that there are 305mm and 320mm discs but which way round they are on the calipers im buggered if i can remember!

yea id be happy to pass em on for some cash , make us an offer , they are off my S not needed now as i have gus's (which was my old set) of PFM superbike calipers n discs

calipers in this pic Image
got stainless bolts and slider pins , really good condition, pads as well
