MOT for Boxer Cup Replica

Postby Clive Alive » Sun Oct 07, 2007 12:40 pm

Hi - my Boxer Cup Replica is coming up for its 3rd birthday and I am trying to locate an MOT tester in/around Cheltenham/Glocestershire that is not going to fail her for having the catalyst removed (I have a Y piece fitted with the standard Laser cans - fruity but not outrageous!).

Does anyone know of anyone? BVM Moto in Stroud have suggested Bar Ash in Stroud, where they send their MOTs - but they are not sure whether they would pass my BCR! :?

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Clive

Clive,

Could be wrong (I usually am), but I don't think there's a legal requirement for bikes to be fitted with a cat.

If your Lasers are road legal / not offensively loud, and the bike's in a reasonable state of tune you should be okay getting through the test.

I think Mark's right. It's down to the testers discretion and there aren't any emission regulations on the mot for bikes yet or so I believe.

Hi,

my R1100s (not BoxerCup) but with Y-piece and Laser passed the MOT at BMW "North of Oxford" garage...only comment on MOT certificate - "noisy exhaust" :D
i know it might be a bit far for you,
thx Lars

Thanks for your comments - I am worried about the noise rather than emissions. Though far as I am concerned the pipes are quite muted (especially compared to my previous Guzzi which had 'race' pipes fitted) -but I have heard that the MOT rules are now much stricter - so I am keen to learn of any tester who is known to exercise their "discretion" in favour of bikes that don't ''whisper''.

If I find such a person closer than Oxford I will post the information.

Cheers
Clive

Vines of Guildford (BMW main dealer) passed by Boxer Cup Replika (with cat replacement pipe) without issue this year. I asked if it would be a problem and they said not.

My bike now has the full race laser system, so I'm guessing I may not be so lucky next year come MOT time !

Find out where your nearest Harley dealer get their MOTs done. That should rule exhaust noise out of the equation!

They would probably appreciate a bit of peace and quiet whilst testing your bike.

Interesting, At full chat the boxer with y pce, laser is not loud as are other higher revving engines, depends on accoustics, where and how sound is measured. Sound measurement and its scale from memory are difficult to get your head round. It would appear from this thread that there exists inconsistency at mot stations (no suprise there then) regarding sound measurement. I agree with the advice offered about using a Harley testing station. From experience my bike has been recorded several times at various points on tracks and i have never been pulled whereas high revving bikes have with so called road legal exhaust have. Please.... nobody try to explain the DB scale. :? Chris.

Take it to Tredworth Motorcycles in Gloucester. Sensible ex-grass track person runs it.
Firm but fair on noise as long as it's not an obvious police magnet.

He does all mine - including the supermoto

I have taken my K100 (with Remus can) to Medway Scooters in Strood, Kent for a number of years.

Always a thorough but fair test, and as they only deal in hair dryers I know they won't fail something if they're looking for work...
2011 Harley-Davidson FLD Switchback - yeah, I know. I've always wanted one though...

Hi,
I was assured by Linds in Norwich when I had my Y piece fitted, that the only countries in Europe where a cat is compulsory are Germany & Switzerland.
I have used two local independant testers here in Norfolk (Swaffham & Watton) and emissions have not been mentioned. One did comment "Great sounding boxer"!
Cheers Mark
