Another HP2 Sport anomaly
Hello all. On a ride recently I was aware that i was low on fuel so kept an eye out for the reserve light to come on. Well it didn’t and the engine cut out 1 km from the nearest fuel station. A long push for a 71 year old. From then on I named it Jacinda after the New Zealand prime minister who resigned because she ‘had nothing left in the tank.’ Then the fun started. Checking the bmw fiche no fuel level system is found. Checking the R12S fiche, there is a strip and a float depending on whether or not the bike had a computer and states that the strip/float is also found on the HP2 Sport. Well logic would suggest that it has a float and not a strip as it only registers when reserve is reached and therefore it has no computer. Checking the Reprom DVD for the HP2 Sport makes no mention of any fuel level sensor. So onto the internet. Here I found a reference to a small cup with a ball float inside it which would make sense. 3 different options so far. Rang two different BMW dealers. No one had a clue. So I have started to pull it apart to see what actually exists. I’d be very interested to hear if anyone has had a similar experience with the fuel level sensor.

Oh joy... I know zip about HP2s but I've always relied on resetting the odometer combined with a reasonable idea of total distance per tank. I've never trusted electric fuel guages; an indication at best! But surely the bike has some indication of low fuel... Can a dealer help by querying the VIN? Or try a parts lookup on RealOEM?

Re: Another HP2 Sport anomaly
As in the post the RealOEM parts fiche show nothing for the HP2 Sport and neither does the dealers parts fiche. I am using the tripmeter, filling up every 250 km. I would’ve expected more from what was their premium model at the time.

Hi Capt Howdy
I’ve not got hp2 sport unfortunately but after reading your fuel woes (I do understand as having run dry twice on my 12s it ain’t funny) I looked up the riders manual for your machine, here’s a screenshot
There should have been 2 warning symbols in the dash one a yellow general warning triangle then the fuel pump symbol indicating approximately 3ltr remaining which maybe equates to 24 mpg that’s U.K. mpg. If you didn’t have them showing perhaps you have a faulty dash.

More likely a duff fuel strip, just had one replaced on my K1200S.
They were that poor that BMW were extending the warranty to an additional 12 years on them.
Apparently the new ones are finally "fixed" so hopefully I won't be having to have a new one. I had several on my K1200GT

Re: Another HP2 Sport anomaly
Hey Phil. All that used to happen until it didn’t. I put the GS911 on it and it indicated a heater element failure which would normally indicate a strip but i think that is just a generic term for whatever the fuel sensor is. SLParry the whole reason for this post is what type of fuel sensor does it have. There is nothing documented on the reprom dvd or RealOEM. I also have a dealer BMW reprom when i unwittingly purchased a pirated copy from eBay. There is no mention of any fuel sensor for the HP2 Sport on this either. All that is left is to dismantle it and see what’s in there.

I have my answer. A borescope into the tank showed the fuel level switch to be the same as the 9T Pure. A small ‘can’ with a ball float inside it. It seems the bottom of the can is at the same level as the fuel when reserve is reached and the ball sits on the bottom of the can closing a circuit. Hopefully a good clean will have the reserve warning on the dash back in operation.
