Rear Drive Bearing

Hi all

After some advice on if I need to replace the bevel box bearings on my 2001 R1100s and on if it's a fairly straight forward job, a competent home mechanic could do, I also have access to a machine shop.
The reason for my inquiry is when I have the bike on a paddock stand and holding the rear wheel with both hands there's a very slight bit of movement in the wheel. If it was the front I would replace the front bearings as a matter of course but seeing there no bearings in the rear wheel and the bearings are in the bevel box I'm thinking these may need to be replaced.Just to add there is no noise or harshness from spinning the wheel. I'm not sure as I never checked before and am doubly not sure if a very slight bit of play is the norm from the shaft drive. Any help on the matter would be much appreciated.

As far as I am aware, there should be no movement at the rear wheel. I presume you mean side to side movement.
My bearings were replaced by Mike Overy at Overland and there was an almost minuscule amount of movement.

Are you sure it's the bevel box ? The play may be in the paralever bearings, easier to detect if you remove the paralever arm from the bevel box. I've never replaced the large bearing in the bevel box , when the front bearing became noisy a while back but I had a complete spare unit which I swopped.

Was this expensive to have a dealer do? just wondering if I can do it myself I've seen the bearing on Motorworks retailing for about £26

Like Humbug says it's a very slight side movement in a way you would check for play in a bearing when the wheel is suspended.
When the bike is on its side stand there is no movement just wondering if I'm getting a little paranoid.

Sounds like paralever bearings. Not long did mine and all three bearings in the bevel box . With the help of bill in Barnsley and his special made tools. There's a few posts on here for para bearings.

Try adjuting the rear paralever bearings before you replace anything.
Very simple job to adjust, you don't even need to remove the rear wheel.
