Battery BMW R1200 ST 2005

Hi all,

it would appear that the cowboy who sold me my BMW r 1200 ST (Ed Cosker Superbikes) had a 12amp battery on it some research shows the bike should have a 19amp unit. it may be as no surprise to inform you that it is now no good.

I was hoping that someone could take the seat off theirs and have a look at the product code on the Battery as there is a great deal of conflicting information on what is the correct one and will it fit, correct terminal position etc. if you could give me the dimensions that would also be really helpful I would really appreciate your help with this matter

hi ,
i put a yuassa gel battery in my 1150 , and the same make in my 12 , never had a problem with either , good battery is vital , helps abs etc .
if your stuck ill get a part number , but i bought mine and a trickle charger for just over a hundred quid , including delivery to belfast.

Just got a gel one for my 11S and a new one for my Saab and together they were lots cheaper than my local battery supplier or ebay.

The ST battery is a bit of an oddball size compared to other boxers. The best one I could find for mine was the Motobatt MBYZ16H for just over £50 on fleabay - rated at 240CCA/16Ah. I think its originally a Harley fitment, but its exactly the same size as the original. It turns the engine over noticeably quicker than the original BMW Exide my ST had when I got it.

The Motobatt has 2 extra terminals fitted, which are handy for any 'extras' you might want to connect. Most ads for it show it in bright yellow, but mine came in good old black - not that it really matters! Maximum dimensions for the ST are 151L x 88W x 147H, but no doubt an extra mm here or there won't matter much.

I did have the Tayna 'uprated' Enduroline one fitted before the Motobatt, that was 210CCA/14Ah.

I think the original fitment for the ST is an LTX14BS, '14' referring to the Ah rating. I don't think I've ever seen a 19Ah one that fits the ST.

I seem to remember, when I was having problems with an Odyssey / Powercommander anomaly - that when I bought a BMW-sourced battery - it was a 19Ah battery - and told by the mechanic, that the 19Ah battery was standard fare.........

I'm pretty sure the RT was the only one that got a 19Ah one as standard - that wouldn't physically fit the ST.

The recommended battery in my 1100s abs is 19ah but they are 180mm long .I've trawled through a platinum batteries paper catalogue that I have and I can't find anything with a 151mm long case other than the ytx14bs.
YTX 14BS type batteries are standard fitment in 1200gs's and the like . Not sure why the St would be different. All I do know is that the 12a/h gs battery doesn't turn over my 1100s . I guess the starter gearing is different?

A YTX14BS does fit the ST, anything physically bigger doesn't, there's no room for it. The Motobatt MBYZ16H is the same physical size as the YTX14BS.

What he said - Motobatt.

BTW - They come with loose terminals that can be fitted back or front so it will always fit right to the wiring. (I use the spare mounting points for getting power to my Sat Nav mount and LCD running lights. The ST has no fuse box to pick power up from and if you cut into any other wire you get a fault because of the Can Bus system

Sorry I didn't make myself clear , I was referring to the op comment re 19a/h required. I couldn't find any 19 a/h batteries with the required case size.
