Rear Wheel Info

Hi All,
I've had in my possesion for a good while now a wider rear wheel, and I'm now considering fitting to the R1100S (I need a new rear tyre, so why not buy a 180 instead of a 170). However, this has raised some questions in my mind:

1) Will it fit straight on? My bike is a 99 non ABS model. I have no idea what bike the wheel is from (I probably DID know at some point in the dim and distant past, but what happens in the past stays in the past - at least that's how it seems these days....). Are there differences between the rear wheels of different model years and/or ABS / non ABS bikes? How do I tell?

2) Will the disc swap over? Probably heavily related to the question above....

2) Assuming its a straight bolt on fit, would I need to do anything else before carrying on?

I'm guessing the 'new' wheel must have a part number on it, so I'll check that out tonight. That may answer some of the questions, but I would appreciate any input in the meantime.

that is a bit complicated as the R1100S rims look similar to those of the K1200RS (aka flying brick), Rockster and R1150 models ...

The 1100S was available with a 5" rim and at a surcharge with a 5.5" rim. The disc (and ABS ring) were fixed on the rim. Other models had the disc fixed to the final drive ... To further complicate the matters the rim was available in two versions for the earlier ABS and the later evo ABS (thicker ABS rings).

I have no knowledge which rim you have and if it fits ... I suppose it can be made to fit when the rim has the mount points for the disc (brake).

Sorry, didn't make that clear. They're definitely R1100S rims - I'm just not sure which year R1100S they came off, and whether it had ABS or not.

if its def a 11S rim then its fairly easy. You just need appropriate shims or not. The different rims: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?m ... &lang=enUS

Try to mount the rim you have and see if the disc touches anything or not ...

On my '99 ABS 2 model, the abs ring is fitted between the wheel and the disc. Presumably the disc mounting posts are machined shorter on the abs models ? I know the parts diagram shows spacers for the wheel but I've never seen these.
If possible measure the distance between the mounting face of the wheel and the disc mounting post or transfer the disc to the new wheel and see if it lines up with the caliper.
I had two wheels to try when I converted to 5'5" . The disc didn't line up on the first one I tried.

Did a bit of digging through my old messages and reminded myself that I bought the wheel from a fellow trixter who had a 2001 non ABS bike. That being the case, hopefully it'll be a straight swap. Now just need to get it powder coated in the right colour.
Recommendations for a good powder coater in the West Midlands anyone?
