Wiring for Garmin.

Postby bikemad99 » Fri Mar 12, 2004 11:11 am

Stempy,

as Chris says you are the expert, could you please help. I have got my lead for the Garmin. It has 4 bare wires on one end to connect to bike.As I think I only need 2 to power it, which 2 ? Where is the best place to make the connection? there is enough wire to reach back under the seat where my fag lighter type plug connects.Would this be a good place ?

Thanks

Reg

Assuming you got your power cable from Lynks Cables you should be able to email them and they will send you either a web link or a wiring diagram for it. The Garmin manual also shows which pins are data and which are power.

Don't forget you need to fit an inline fuse of 0.5A (I have a 1A fitted as it was the smallest I could find at the time) to protect the GPS unit.

Reg,

I have just read the last part of your question too, on the S I have tapped into the loom under the seat where it feeds the rear light. In this case the Garmin is only powered up when you have side/full lights on and it's really easy to do.

Rgds,

Rob

Reg/rob,
tis as good a place as any to tap into the loom - my autocom was fitted in a similar fashion by the techie at their HQ at Warwick

15mm/20mm/ what type of fuse style is it? I might be able to dig a 500mA fuse out for you as such an expensive piece of kit should be protected by the right 10p fuse :?

It's one of them pretty glass ones with a chrome cap at each end... technical me :) I'll have to go and find the spare one to measure it but it's small so I'd hazard a guess at 15mm.

I've wired a power socket from the battery to the left hand side of the cockpit with the inline fuse visible just below the fairing under the throttle. The bastard bit about it is you can't get two hands onto the fuse holder to undo it so it's a fairing off job. :(

I see you're doing S/S bits. Can you get me the following?

6 No. M4x22 (cross head / philips screw)
6 No. M4x24 (cross head / philips screw)
8 No. flat washers to suit
8 No. lock nuts with the nylon insert (Nylock?)

I've just fitted city lids and noticed that the fixings supplied with these are too short to re-fix the touring lids.

If you can, let me know the total cost and I'll drop you a cheque.

I might be interested in other S/S fixing kits but probably only to brake calipers, and footrest hangers.

Cheers

If you can put a ruler over it at some point I might be able to find one for you!.

Unfortunately cross head/phillips are a one item that my contact doesn't do as they mainly specialise in socket type screws. However they have the following:

12 M4x25 Slotted Pan Head Screws (cylindrical head with rounded top) £2.25p
8 M4 Nylocs £1
10 M4 Washers 13p

However for that added "class" you could always have M4 x 25mm Socket Button Head Screws like what is used for the R11S fairing at the same price of £2.25p

If you'd like me to grind them back to the 22 and 24mm lengths I can do that before sending them out to you.

P&P would be £2
