Now that would be handy to know

I think the guy I am thinking of is Steptoe. Hope he does not mind the name check.

So, my question to you guys is this, is there an alternative to the motorworks / BMW one, I`ve heard of twin lipped seals etc but don`t know the best one to get.

Hello Hayden

I have the same issue as you. I changed leaking seal by the clutch slave cylinder (+ the input shaft seal) no problem.

The output shaft seal was fine but started leaking when I replaced the seal with a brown one. Changed seal again but started leaking after 5 miles. I bought a 3rd seal (not fitted yet) but decided to get another decent gearbox with 26000 miles instead (still waiting to be fitted).

When I pull the gearbox, I'll try to determine whether the leak is at the shaft or surround.

ps - on the original g/box I drilled a hole between the slave cylinder / rear input shaft bearing (per Pelican Board tutorial) so any future leaks will vent out the box rather than down the clutch actuator.

Cheers

Hello Julian

Thanks for that, I would be interested in what you find, I havn`t pulled mine apart yet as still in use for work.. [smilie=cold.gif] ( and I don`t have the cash yet!)

Like yours mine was leaking virtually as soon as replaced, I fitted a brown one, the same colour as came out so looks like the previous owner had the same issue....and why he sold me the bike..

Its not a bad job to do if a little time consuming but I don`t see the point just for it to happen again, I`am just plucking up the courage ( and finding the time) to get the box out and inspect the output bearing in the hope its wear there?..)

Cheers

Steve

There is a breather on the gearbox. And i don't know how you over fill a boxer gearbox. You'd have to lay it on it's side

No problem, and yes, i rebuild gearboxes.

The new output new seal is usually put back in exactly the same place. Sometimes the output shaft has a polished section where the old seal has worn it shiney. This can cause a leak. If your's is very shiney or you can feel an edge with your finger nail then put the seal in a fraction more or a fraction less.
