Dead speedo - am I missing something?

Dead speedo - am I missing something?

Hi again trixters,

My 2001 1100S recently had its broken servo/ABS removed ,which meant swapping the rear brake line and disturbing the wiring in that area. This had the unfortunate side effect of killing my speedo stone dead! Searching old posts here it seems the speed sender connects to the wiring loom behind the R/H rear panel – investigating I found a larger connector for the brake pedal switch (left in the pic), a smaller one for the rear ABS sensor (right in the pic) and 2 empty ones coming from the loom.

Am I missing something??

Is the speed read by the ABS sensor or is there a separate speedo sender that fell off whilst the brake lines were being changed? If so, where does it go?

I suspect that the rear wheel ABS sensor is also the speedo sensor. Looking at photo's of ABS / Non ABS bikes both only have one sensor in the bevel box but they are different (located differently) so I am making the assumption that on ABS bikes it is a dual purpose sensor. Someone will be along in a moment to confirm this no doubt.
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity

My bike has the ABS sensor and nothing else:

Some bikes have a sensor going down vertically into the bevel box and the ABS sensor slot blanked out:

And some bikes have both!

My 1999 has two sensors; speedo + ABS. How much later for the switch to dual function single sensor?
Oyster. 1999 R1100S. Almost original.

Did you remove this box (by drilling out the tamper-proof screws) from the end of the unit...

This is what I did when I removed the I-ABS unit from my '02 model (along with fitting a couple of 'short' solid hydraulic pipes) and so retained the speedo'. Just thinking you may be looking in the wrong place. :wink:

The work was done by Steve (Motoscot) - as I recall he cut off the black plug and bridged some of the wires with heat-shrink connectors. He said he'd done several before and this was his standard technique - perhaps they were all GSs with cable driven speedos!

I'll get in touch with him and see if we can sort this out.
