I got a 14mm drain plug tool from my local motor factors (was for a BMW car) - still needed cutting down (they other end was 17mm I think but I cut that bit off) to get in the space available but was only £2.99 so can't complain. Could not find a 14mm allen anywhere!

finding an allen key local is my problem as well.
just thought there may be plenty of trixters out there with left over section of allen key they could post to me for next to no money rather than pay excessive postage costs.

I have modified car drain plug key I use for my gearbox. You will need a 17mm ring spanner but you are more than welcome to borrow it.

I just so happen to have a section of 14mm allen key which I cut from the allen key itself last week. I bought the allen key from a local tool merchants in Skipton:-

L.J. Hydleman & Co. Ltd.
Marton Street
Skipton,
North Yorkshire
BD23 1TF

Tel: 01756 798083
www.hydleman.co.uk

(item. code 6351970 no. 42 EL 14)

Wasn't particularly cheap at £10 but it is good quality and its an extra long version (around a foot in length). Like yourself I realised that I'd have to pay around this for a cheaper item with postage anyway. I just cut the short end down with my cheapo dremel bought from Aldi last year. The allen key works a treat with plenty of leverage should you need it due to the extra length. The people at Hydleman are really helpful and though they are not geared for public sales they'll sort you out and I shouldn't think they'll sting you with postage.

I was thinking of putting the bit I cut from it under the seat as part of the tool kit but if you're struggling I can let you have it. I just think you'll be better off with the allen key - no extra tools/spanners needed making the process less awkward. I'm happy to call back in and buy one for you on your behalf and post it accordingly if they come up with daft p+p charges. Give them a ring and see what they say.

regards

Rob

NB

Your smack on. Because of the limited space available between drain plug and frame, I cut the 18mm? centre bit in half just below the hole and also had to reduce the 14mm bit as well. I did it this way because the 14mm bit wasn't long enough on its own and its also easier to use with a 18mm spanner rather than a 14mm as they are usually a bit longer.

Handy hint for getting the new oil in (if you don't have a flexible funnel) is to cut up a plastic milk bottle so the cut handle part goes into the filler hole and the rest of the bottle acts as the reservoir. Bit difficult to explain but you'll get the picture when you try it.

Cheers

Gary,.. I've got the 14mm Allen Key that you need. I cut it down from a 14mm Drainplug Tool and just attach a 14mm spanner. If you want it, let me know your address and I'll drop it in the post to you.

No problems NB, If you fancy meeting up at all when you're around let us know and I'll put the kettle on, another 'handy hint' when draining the oil get some kitchen foil whilst your better halfs not looking and wrap it around the exhaust just below the drain plug. Acts as a heat shield for your hands and should any oil drip onto it, it won't tarnish the exhaust.

No, you'll probably have to cut the centre section in half.

Gary, I have a 14mm allen key that I had a section cut off for that very purpose, I will get my mate to cut the rest of it into 1" sections and post one out to you, if you can wait a week or two?

Thanks to geoff for supplying the piece of 14mm allen key i now have a super tool for draining the gearbox.
i welded the piece of allen key into a long 14mm spanner to get good leverage.
