My Boxer is fugged

Postby Mountain 300 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 6:01 pm

:( as the title says my R1100S is fugged. Had a bit of noise coming from the g/box sounded like release bearing. Came off the m/way on my way home managed to drop down 2 gears then would'nt go any further. Did 18 mile on back lanes in one gear. Clutch disengages drive with no problems, but its still stuck in gear. Looks like I'll be ripping the box out once we get back from honeymoon. On the upside, I'm glad it did'nt happen during my trip to Chernobly during the summer.

Hi Mountain,
So sorry to hear your 1100s is broken :(
My 2001 1100s' gearbox 'expired' after only 36K. The bike did have a full BMW service history and after some communication with BMW UK my bike was fitted with a new gearbox at no cost to me.

Perhaps a letter to BMW Customer Services might save you some pain & money?

Have a great Honeymoon
Good luck,
Rob

Thats an idea, how old was your bike before the box gave up?
Mines a 1999 with 61,750 on the clock with majority of the servicing done by BMW including the last one. I think they will probably say not interested, but its worth a try. I think BM would probably charge about £800 just for the labour on removing and refitting the box. God knows how much on top to strip it and find out wants gone wrong.

Nigel,.. yep, ..I'm a Courier,... so I don't do 'Wales and West' :-). Come over,... its yours if you want it. You can have 3/4 of a 600 Bandit if you need that too.

Jason,.. SORN,.. tax/mot expired,.. October i think. I just honestly don't have time to sort it out,.. and I'll be 'homeless' form April 23rd,... so everything must go.

Seriously,... If anyone wants it,.. even if just for 'Worthy Project' for a College or anything,.... I'd just like to see somebody get some fun from it.

What's that, 300mls to Holyhead give or take? Do I know a man with a van who can?
(and the bandit would make an interesting bit of modern art with history (and hopefully no blood..)
I'll let you know.

Judging from the forecast you've got two clear days - unless you get flooded out!

Hope it goes OK...

Progress so far, the box is out :D
How much swearing wasd there........................ loads
Its been 32 years since I was a mucanic, forgot how much spanner rash hurts :(
Having studied our folks photo's about g/box removal, I've definetly taken some shorts cuts, tank still attached, took arse end off complete with cans, down pipe and Y pipe. Thanks good for the dremel I bought 3 years ago and have never used it until today, gone through a few cutting discs chopping them bloody bolts that I used to fit the Y pipe ages ago, christ there a pain. Also took the back frame off with the complete arm and diff attached, prop shaft popped off the back of the box very nicely, which was a relief haven heaard about other folks trials and tribulations with that little circlip.
The clutch plate looked in really good nick to say that its done 61+k miles. I do have some piccies which I will post up later, only bobbed in to get the torque settings for the clutch assembly then I am gonhna leave the rest till tomorrow.
Nearly forgot, the old box is defintly fugged, theres more slack in the input shaft than Joan Collins, reckon the main bearing failed, the oil seal also also manged to work its way nearly out of its housing[/img]
