Top Ten Mods?

Well, had the bike for over 2 months now and thoroughly enjoying it. No alterations so far other than an Ilmberger hugger. A pair of Conti Road Attacks going on tomorrow.
Went out with a pack of japanese sportsbikes the other night, the bike coped quite well all things considered! But I think I'd like a bit more acceleration and top end please... What's the most cost effective way of getting more?
I know there's loads of performance info to be found here on the Forum, but I don't think anyone's quite pulled it all together..?
As a newby to the world of the 1100s it'd be nice to see a list of performance mods and their gains, a Top Ten say, of best value/bang-for-buck mods in order of performance merit... Anyone?
My guesses...
1. Ditch the cat? Buy a dog, get some excercise.
2. Do advanced training?
3. Lose some weight you fat bastard. (see 1.)
4. Power Chip?
5. I've no idea...
etc
Bike has Sports Pack and Laser end-cans, cat fitted, stock otherwise.
Cheers
Glenn

Ohlins or other aftermarket suspension

You mention 'Cost effective' well there ain't anything thats in that category!!!,to get any kind of major difference it's a case of the 'Sum of Parts, and there's lots of e'm, and they all cost, just a case of how bloody minded you are about these things!!!,second thoughts'How deep are your pockets'!!!
Still interested??

Best, most cost effective single improvement, ditch the cat for a Y piece. Dogs cost money/time, dont bother.
All engine mods WILL affect the fuelling, so add a Powercommander to your shopping list.

I would agree with ditching the cat as a cheap-ish, easy and effective mod. Just make sure you get four replacement bolts for the joints between the header pipes and the cat since they are likely to be very rusty and at least one will shear! luckily it shears in the cat that you are discarding, so no great panic there.
The next mod that brings appreciable changes is new adjustable shock absorbers. Look to pay anywhere between £600 and £1000 depending on the make. I had some Technoflex at the lower end of the price scale which were a great improvement on my 20k mile + standard shocks. Ohlins cruise in at around £1000 a pair.
Happy modding

If you want to do any serious distance on it.....
1. Fit a more comfortable seat.
2. Raise the bars (easily done if it has ABS.)
3. Higher screen, though not all makes suit all people.
4. Peg lowering kit. Not fitted one myself yet, just done 650 miles the other day and I think the pegs are too high for long distance comfort.
5. Aftermarket shocks, there are a few decent manufacturers out there and their shocks will almost certainly out perform the originals.
6. Don't know what to do about the vibes.

Forgotten all about this post! Apologies and thanks for all your comments!
Recently got rid of the cat and fitted a Lazer Y-piece. Can't quite believe how much more quickly the bike picks up!
Excellent! I'm having to get used to it all over again!
Just had the 24k service. Expensive, but can't speak highly enough of the customer-service from Astle at Grimsby. Highly recommended.
Had an F800ST for the day, fantastic little bike, but lacking any discernable BMW 'character'. But could I be tempted with the 800GS due to be shown at the NEC later this year..?

My recollection of modding bikes and cars in the past has been that you spend £££s on some gizmo - it feels great for a while each time you drive/ride it - then after a couple of weeks you don't really notice much difference.
I guess if you could afford to have all the mods done at once then it would really transform the bike. But then most of these mods don't come cheap. By the time you tot them all up you could buy a faster, sharper handling bike.

Each to his own! Fazer 1000, finest factory finished engine in its day, super quick and light. Sprint 1050, possibly the best all rounder, looks like all the others. VFR must have the right formula, it's still around after all these years.
R1100S, just look at it from any angle, then ride it. What character. Mine is definately worth spending a bit on to make it handle better, stop better, accelerate better - at present it looks the same as it did in the brochure.
It's a boxer, not a vee, or a four, or....

The sad fact is if you want an alrounder that does most things the selection is as limited now,as it was 7 years ago, sure the Fazer wasn't around then, the motor is great the rest is like summat out of a christmas cracker,i've a mate with one,he's very happy with his,now he's changed wheels and suspension!!,he just can't find any aftermarket brakes.
The 1050 is a great bike, try rideing it two up,it's bloody nightmare, with passenger perched out in the breeze, the VFR is a good'un if you like small motors, linked brakes and your prepared to play 'Dixie' on the gear lever.
In stock trim i'm no lover of the S either, but rather than sell it, i've turned it into what i want and it's all the better for it,i bet the cost of bits comes no were near what some people have spent on various bikes.
