I am your latest new member, I have just bought a 2005 1100S (traded my ZRX1200R, silver and white, fitted with Sportsfahrwerk (sports suspension? which runs about 20mm higher) and a 51/2 inch back wheel.
I am working in Munich so I run seasonal plates which means having bought it 5 days ago the bike now has to sit in the garage un-ridden until March, 3 months of torture!
Any hints on ownership and essential mods gratefully received.

Essential mods. There are many, but here is what I ended up doing with my S before I sold it. (51K owned 6 years)
Sensible modifications included.
Ohlins shocks fitted front and rear this year.
Considerable expensive, but worth every penny!
Stainless hoses front and rear. Essential after 2/3 years IMHO
Y piece exhaust to improve performance without need for re chip and fully road legal. Lovely sound but not noisey.
All fairing bolts changed to stainless steel.
Carbon fibre front mudguard. (Not the normal fake rubbish. Sandbar Comp.)
Aircraft quality plastic screen to replace original. (Again not the normal rubbish. Cee Bailey’s from the States.)
Rear hugger.
Headlight protector.
Upgraded horn. (Essential as original packs up after 40K miles/5 years)
Gel battery. (Your's should have this as standard?)
Power socket.
BMW Panniers and rails included. (These are very expensive! Try here or fleabay)
With ownership generally, no matter how much you look after the finish, they tend to get a bit scabby around the front forks and engine. Keep them clean but don't go mad with cleaning products, and use WD40/ACF45 to protect after.
ALWAYS check the oil once a week or daily if touring. Other than that, they tend to be hassle free!
Plastics are high quality, but use Mer polish.
Enjoy your new toy, once you can get your hands on it. Oh, use it daily if you can these things like to be used.
