Thanks for reply, giving it some thought I am guessing that letting a air cooled bike idle on its side stand is not a good idea especially a boxer engine where rh cylinder could be starved of oil, skiddy boxers wrote:My old R1100S would only start with the bike with the side stand up. This has been discussed before and it seems that it only applies to bikes built around 2000 - 2002 and even then not all do this.
Hi Herb it was in neutral the only way bike will crank and start would be with side stand up or standing on centre stand if you push side stand down with engine running it cuts out engine as you would expect it to do,Herb wrote:Was it in gear? My bike will not start with the side stand down and the bike in gear, even with the clutch in.
Hi yes it has centre stand and it will crank and start standing on it but I do not think any safety switches are on this centre stand.Dog Tyred wrote:Arrrrhhhh but will it start on the centre stand (assuming it has one)??

I am sure I can get use to this and will not be altering it so thanks for everyone's input on this matter.Britisherspy wrote:It will crank but the petrol pump will not be running so - be aware. you can buy a harness to sort it but I just get used to it.

I am glad it has this feature now.
I beg to differ there must be a reason why engine will not idle on side stand.Tapio wrote:pc-uk007 wrote:Thanks for reply, giving it some thought I am guessing that letting a air cooled bike idle on its side stand is not a good idea especially a boxer engine where rh cylinder could be starved of oil, skiddy boxers wrote:My old R1100S would only start with the bike with the side stand up. Don't understand... why whould that happen? The oil system feeds oil to both cyl. Regardless of inclination. I can see a problem with oil not draining from the LH valve cover, but apparently, it's not a problem.

Some do and some dont.
Mine does start and idle with the prop stand down (R1100S 2001 model).

Never ever do this unless it has malfunctioned or faulty and you just want to bypass switch to get you mobile again.daves wrote:It's a safety feature isn't it - stops you riding away with the side stand down?
Some people remove the switch to disable the feature.
