Still no sign of my R1100S so i'm looking at what to get next. After 10 years with the boxer cup I fancy a change from a boxer.

I mainly commute through London but want something I can use to travel long distances in comfort too. I'm currently thinking about getting a K1300GT.

Thoughts?

Quite a lump to commute through London but you won't be alone. I fancy one myself for Europe but I honestly don't think I could reign myself in. I'd be to tempted to use all that available power. I got 'Gatso'd' in France a couple of weeks ago on the R12S. Speaking of which; I'll start my own thread...

It'd be a brave chap who bought/ran one of those outside of the warranty, very nice very quick by all accounts but no stranger to the warranty dept.

Search for Steve Parry's experience with his K1200GT, it makes very sobering reading.

I HAD QUITE A FEW PROBLEMS WITH MY k1200, BUT I THINKA LOT OF TISSUES, ESPECIALLY THE GEARBOX HAVE BEEN RECTIFIED ON THE 1300'S.
(oops sorry caps lock)
if i was commuting i'd probably be looking at a tiger 800, or a gs 800

Agreed.....

The K isn't a commuter, to my mind, and could be a real expense to run as one.

A two-up comfy tour bike / commuter? I think you are in the GS1200 / R1200RS territory - with the GS being the better option? :D

still I love it to bits though :) ..... you can put BMW extended warranty on it here

https://www.motorrad-warranty.co.uk/Login/Index

and I would highly recommend it as K's are complex machines with some very expensive parts.

I don't think you're describing a commuter, though - Steve.

If I was looking at Commuting/Touring (2-up) - i'd probably go for two bikes.

MT-09 for the commuting/playing duties

R1200ST for sports/touring or R1200GS for touring.

Or....., if it's just for commuting.....go for a Honda Dulville, shaft drive, built in luggage and there is absolutely NO WAY anyone is going to want to steal it

Thank's for all the replies.

I quite like the new RS but can't quite stretch to one. I struggle with the thought of a GS1200 in london as I don't want to look like a Ewan wannabe. The 800GT probably makes most sense so I should probably try one to see, think it might be a bit underpowered and too small for two up work.

The K1300 is atracting me because I fancy something comfortable to ride up to Manchester, when I need to work there, and the power is so tempting. I've followed a few through London and they did not seem too bad. If you see how fast the limo bikes get through town you realise it's not the bike that makes the difference.

Two bikes would be best, if only i had a garage but then I'd probably still have my old bike!
I hate having to choose just one bike which is why I kept the boxercup for so long!

I commute intolondon on my R1200ST and the only bike that I really get regularly held up behind are GS's . This is beacuse the handlebars are too wide for commuting once you get into proper dense traffic. Just saying. :P

Depending on how tall you are how about an F800GS? The new adventure model is lovely. Super comfortable and narrower than the 1150/1200GS.

I've come to the realisation that if I could only have one bike it would either be my 1150GS I have now or a (non water cooled) R1200R.

I commute on the GS through central London and don't have any problems with gaps. I find I get held up by scooters that don't think they can make gaps that I will happily go through

To be fair I think the same about my F8GS. It's a great little bike. OK the K12GT is better than it on long motorway hauls, which is why I've not used it for a tour of Scotland yet, despite having had issues with the K in the past I really do enjoy riding it too :)

The height is not a problem as I'm 6'6'' and over 17 stone.

I'm a bit concerned with getting an F8 either GS or GT as I used to find the boxercup under powered when two up with luggage and overtaking.

Steve, you have/had a boxercup too, how do you compare the power of that with the F8?

The K1300GT is still favorite but also wondering if a VFR1200 would be a good compromise between power and size. Anyone ridden one?

The cup has loads of bottom end grunt in comparison, but to be fair the 800 has more than enough and is a really pleasant place to be, handling and steering is a lot lighter on the 8 obviously with the huge handlebars and it's a comfy place to be. The cup is a bit more focussed.

However, the 800 is the one I'm spending more time on nowadays as it's "easier" to ride :)
