New Speeding Fines from April

Re: New Speeding Fines from April
My experience of the IAM is that they are an elitist bunch of sanctimonious, clipboard waving, holier than thou snobs, who have a hugely elevated sense of their own abilities and skills.
A more appropriate name for them would be the I - AM.

You know what they say fontana.....in every organisation or group of people who've come together under a common cause, there'll always be the odd arsehole!

Of course I would - I was a policeman for 30 years, didn't you know? As would you too, but for different reasons perhaps....

A awful lot of them are, I was lucky I feel to get somebody who wasn't like that at all
Really improved all aspects of my riding.
My problem is now, i dont ride enough to keep my skills honed
Re: New Speeding Fines from April
I think so called "advanced" riding is largely common sense.
You know (or should know), what the speed restriction is at any given time.
You know the optimum position for view around corners, and you can anticipate and react to potential hazards.
Most importantly of all, you are safe.
Many years ago a friend of mine who was an I-AM called me out on this and challenged me to do the test off my own back.
I did so, and passed, not because I'm anything special, but because it's just common sense, and the way they tell you to ride is the way you probably are riding anyway.
They base their training on the Police system of riding but let me assure you, as someone who has trained intensively one to one with a real Police rider, what the IAM offer is a very watered down version.
They are mostly a nice bunch, and there is a good social scene but the IAM are to advanced riding, what the St Johns Ambulance Brigade are to the emergency services.

Trouble with the IAM and probably other "advanced" training groups is in my opinion they can be very anal. Stick to the speed limits at all times is their philosophy , and they really do.
Bloody hell you go out on a sunday run with one of these guys leading it and it is so BORING.
You must have just found the wrong group Steve!
I am a member of RoSPA and have been through IAM as well.
My group obey all speed limits on observed rides. The observers are wearing RoSPA jackets that carry their name, so relatively easy to identify if they are riding less than responsibly.
However, the group rides (not wearing RoSPA jackets), for Gold and Silver holders only are always very very brisk. Most of the guys in the club are older, many are retired, and I never cease to be surprised how bloody fast they can ride and the speed of decision making, which comes from good, early observation.
I have found, in all of the groups I have been involved with, that they are not anal at all, and quite flexible when applying the system, as long as you have consistency. Most of them do ride BMW's though, boring old farts that they are!

.
You would think so, but this is not the case.
Many people have not been taught correct positioning or other 'advanced skills'. I see it all the time. I have nothing but respect for people who join an advanced group to try to learn more skills.

It helped my riding and observation skills no end
My next goal is to get me knee down, sadly that will never happen

Why not?
Book a track day in the summer. Knee down courses on bikes they provide are also possible.

Knee down training? now there's an idea....
Have done a few track days, but nowhere near to getting my knee down.
I need to lose about 4 stone and become a bit more agile

Wow
That was a really intelligent response

Another classic mistake often made by the elitist so called advanced riders.
Being a good rider isn't anything to do with travelling at high speed.
It's about safety, and riding according to the conditions.
If it were all about speed, then we would have to say that someone riding a 125 can't be just as competent on the road as someone with a ZX10
Obviously this is not the case.
Re: New Speeding Fines from April
As I've said previously, any 'advanced' training is a good thing, because a learner is only taught up to the standard that enables them to pass the test, be it for a car or bike licence. The very highest standard for on-road training is the Police Advanced, nothing else comes close - and speed, high speed, is a very big part of the training....in all conditions....because of the exemption given for training purposes. Oh, and it was good fun too!

For a Police officer, who is likely to be in a pursuit situation, yes.
Less important for the civilian rider out for a Sunday spin.
There is way too much focus on high speed in the motorcycling fraternity, which can lead to crashes, especially in group rides where a person may feel inadequate because he or she is struggling to keep up with the others.
I always compare it to shooting.
On the range, when in the company of other shooters, all anyone else cares about is that you are safe.
Scores are very much secondary to that.
"A safe shooter is a good shooter"
Let me ask a question.
If you're out for a ride around the lanes, and you skilfully overtake another rider, do you assume that because of that, you are a better rider than they are ?
