Peak power requires a certain load. But is it necessary that the load take the form of air drag only? What about in the intermediate gears under max acceleration? Isn't it precisely the lack of air drag that allows the power to be used instead to produce a certain rate of acceleration?
What about a rolling road. There's zero air drag involved and the principle there is all about "instantaneous" readings relating to accelerating a mass, is it not? Ok, the rolling road thing is out of context with your post, but my comments regarding accelerating out on the open road aren't.
I'd like to take two steps forward because two of my bikes make roughly 60hp and 75hp and I believe I use that amount on a regular basis.
The ktm sounds one hell of a machine. But if nobody can access the 175hp (I'm not saying they can't) then why have it? Buy a bike with, say, 100hp. What's the difference if max power only equates to a certain top speed and nothing else?

Higher horsepower at the "prime mover" end will give you more torque for any given wheel speed. The job of the gearbox is to provide ratios that match the two ends. The job of the operator is to use these ratios to advantage.
You may not like the "feel" of the thing if that comes at the expense of high engine rpm. Which is fair enough.
My zx6 felt every bit as torquey as my z1000. That's because it was. The power outputs were near as dammit equal. The difference was the engine rpm where it all happened. The bikes had totally different feels. I enjoyed them both for what they were.
Some great deals about on the Suzuki DL1000 Vstrom, it's light, comfortable, has ABS and Traction Control and loads of torque.
