Nurburgring Insurance

SP250's post about insurance has prompted me to post.

I'm off for Motorrad training at the 'Ring in August. I understand that cover is tricky to find. Does anybody have recommendations? Does it become a track day if the circuit isn't open to the public?

Check the small print of your policy.

Most contain a phrase under exclusions something like ' one way toll roads, whether open or closed'. That is the Nurburgring in legal speak.

In my experience cover is hard to find and you are generally undertaking this activity at your own risk. I did the course 5 years ago and really enjoyed it.

The insurance companies got wise to the "public road in Germany" tactic that people used.

So - for bike insurance, you would need to get "trackday" insurance cover.

For "Holiday insurance" - download the M&S policy booklet and see if you are covered for activities like trackdays with their policies?

Otherwise - google "trackday insurance cover" and see what it coughs up?

Having done the Motorrad and other sessions for many years at the 'Ring, my advice is to bite the bullet and cough up for insurance (both bike and yourself) which specifically covers the 'Ring.
Most bike insurance now specifically excludes the 'Ring and as Al says, go for trackday cover and tell them exactly what you are doing. Otherwise risk it, but if you need the cover and you aint got it it could cost you everything. Sorry haven't got any up to date recommendations.

To put it all in context, at least one guy binned his bike from over confidence and lack of talent on each course I went on, sometimes half a dozen damaged bikes, nearly all single bike only involved. In one case there was a fatility from an unfortunate accident.
Though when you consider how many people were doing the courses (150 bikes - to 300 on the mixed bike and car BMW courses) then it was a fairly rare occurence and most people were aware of their capabilities and rode accordingly.

Hello,

If you have the BMW Motorrad Insurance (Which is through Devitt I believe) and the track day is organised by BMW i.e. official then the blurb I have says I would be covered for this.

Also for loan bikes when servicing your etc.

If you have it then might be worth checking if you don't then I'll think you will struggle to get cover
