Todays job .... for ages I've had two digital tv recorders that wouldn't boot with their hard drives connected. But would work as receivers with the hard drives disconnected.

A little research indicated a common fault with 2 cheap capacitors in them.

Popped to Maplin and got 4 better quality capacitors (16 v 1000 microfarad 106 degree ones £1.50 each) removed the old ones soldered in the new an bingo both device now functioning again ....

I can now record programs again :)

Next task is to find some old IDE hard drives to replace the 160GB ones fitted for a bit more space :)

Old crappy capacitors ... damn built in obsolescence :)

Nice job Steve, I may have some old IDE drives at work, I know I have a stack of 40 and 80gb, not sure if there are any larger than 160gb but if I have I'll let you know.

Cheers guys

I've researched further and apparently the unit will accept a 500GB IDE drive so I'm off to search ebay for a decent used drive :) It's no biggy if it takes a while for one to come up as I can easily live with the one that's in it (160G)
