Todays job .... for ages I've had two digital tv recorders that wouldn't boot with their hard drives connected. But would work as receivers with the hard drives disconnected.
A little research indicated a common fault with 2 cheap capacitors in them.
Popped to Maplin and got 4 better quality capacitors (16 v 1000 microfarad 106 degree ones £1.50 each) removed the old ones soldered in the new an bingo both device now functioning again ....
I can now record programs again
Next task is to find some old IDE hard drives to replace the 160GB ones fitted for a bit more space
Old crappy capacitors ... damn built in obsolescence
