R1200GS with fat wheels

Postby Yonkyo » Wed Mar 19, 2008 9:52 pm

1200GS with 17" wheels and fat tyres. What an excellent allrounder.

These two are the best bikes i have ever owned in over 30 years of biking, from FS1E to ZX-10R...

Very nice indeed :D

What wheels did you fit to the GS, and what mods (if any) were required to get them to fit?

The rear tyre looks like a 190

Hi Al

The wheels are from a R1200S, the rear is a 6” rim which takes a 190 tyre.

Mods required are:

Cut approx 10mm off centre stand foot/pad.
Fit 10mm spacer to exhaust hanger bracket
Grind a few mm (using a Dermal etc.) off the back of the front brake callipers (or they will foul the wheel spokes).
You will also need the rear wheel hub bolts for the new wheels, as they are shorter.
That’s it. The front disks and ABS ring are a strait swap.

This conversion really transforms the handling on the GS. Making it turn in much quicker. As well as being able to fit decent tyres also.

Cheers
Brian
