True, I suppose cleaning them is a right pig.
When I build cycle wheels I'm always impressed with how rigid and strong a bunch of flimsy components can be when put together.
The tensioned spoke wheel is a wonder of engineering and design in my opinion.

A nice example of them being used on a production bike.

Steve, do you remember those emergency wire spokes? I always fancied trying to build a wheel with those just to see what would happen. It would probably mean building a wheel and then replacing each spoke with the wire ones, but the price of the emergency spokes put me off. Yep, I'm that sad!!!!

Actually no, think thats the first I heard of them.... sounds like a bad idea though! Is it like a brake cable to replace a broken spoke?

Yikes I thought it was a 1930's antique, haden't spotted a modern motor. But that's plain stupid in that case..............so how do you stop exactly?

That's the idea - the spoke head end was sort of a hook so you could easily have it inbound or outbound and the other end had a swaged threaded end with loads of thread! - I seem to recall they were about £6 each so DTs were peanuts in comparison
