One day's MOT and Tax
Off to France tomorrow. I'm taking the R1100 to register it in France - no MOT's for bikes (bad) - no tax (good)! Realised the MOT had expired by a week. So couldn't tax the bike. Went for an MOT and the DVLA computer hung up for an hour and a half - 18,000 MOT stations, cars and bikes, couldn't ope...

Buell XB9R
Thanks for all the input everybody. Looks like a good deal with reservations. I've heard a lot of stories about wheel bearing failures on the XB9R'. The only bit that really worried me was the story about the 'must have' alignment tool for the belt - especially as it was the Harley dealer that told ...

Buell Firebolt XB9R
Hi folks, Just been offered a Buell Firebolt XB9R, 6000 miles, looks like new, £2500. Anyone know them? I'm not selling the R1100ss, just fancy a lighter fun bike (I'm old). Too dear? Are they reliable? Thirsty? I'm told the rubber band is a dealer fit with alignment tool or the band breaks in fifty...

Hi Rob I'm near Saint Beniot du Sault about 300 miles from you. I'm retired and spend half my time in each country. It makes sense to have a tax free bike and car! I have a little Escort cabriolet in France, Ford Paris charged me over 100 Euros just for the piece of paper that showed they had sold e...

Screen Height
Forgot to mention in my earlier post: as I approach OAP status I find buffetting and wind noise harder to bear when doing a 500 mile stint at 100+ (rumour). I'm about 5ft 11 - any recomendations for how much to increase screen height?

Frenchyfying an R1100ss
Has anyone had experience of converting an R1100s or ss to French plates/registration. I've done it to a car with a bit of hassle (needs no tax now, French MOT every two years!) I really need to know about headlamp conversion - is it bulbs, headlight or something more drastic? I saw a red R1100 in E...

I wasn't really meaning pedestrians. Kids in the back of cars aren't driving. Car stops violently, kid pokes eye out on pencil/toy etc. Whose fault is that? The inattentive driver or the designer of a potentially dangerous device? I taught kids in workshops for 35 years, we took every precaution. Go...

Well funny it may seem. Some people new to the area might not see or read the sign if their attention is distracted at he wrong moment. I'd be interested to see a court case involving an injured child, those bollards come up pretty sharpish. Both drivers and a passenger appear to have hit their head...

Batteries
Sorry if this is old hat. I'm ashamed to say I havn't used my R1100ss since summer 2005 when I went to France. (Black 2001 - 10,000 miles only - disgraceful). The battery has been poor for a couple of years. I was put off by BMW (B.....d, Moronic, W....r) dealers who quoted £95 to over £100 just for...

The black 1200S is a brilliant, beautifully balanced aesthetic design. Not keen on the Duke tubular steel bits, old hat. Horses for courses, why does every bike have to be a 200 mph high frequency vibrating four cylinder wedge with rounded off corners. My S is powerful enough for sustained high spee...
